Things did not go as planned yesterday. Team USA was stunned in the quarterfinals by Canada 99-87. Spain, the favorite in the other half of the bracket, was also stunned by blowing an 11 point lead late to lose to Italy 66-63. As a result, either Canada or Italy will win its first U-19 World Cup. R.J. Barrett, the No. 1 2019 recruit, showed why he was so highly rated by dropping 38 points on the Americans.
So, the gold medal game we expected is now the bronze medal game. Spain was 3-0 in Group C, beating Japan 78-67, Canada 78-73, and Mali 62-43. In the knockout rounds they beat Iran 70-50 and Argentina 70-58 before getting upset by Italy.
As for our own Carsen Edwards, he finished with 12 points, a rebounds, 3 assists, and two steals in the loss to Canada. Everyone struggled though. The U.S. was 25 of 43 from the free throw line and 28 of 85 from the floor.
For the tournament Carsen is averaging exactly 10 points per game.
