Purdue Football Scholarship Grid: July 31 Update

Purdue finally released its 2017 roster this weekend and, as expected, there was some official attrition. We have tried to keep track of the comings and goings over the summer, piecing together who has left via Twitter and other rumors. It has made for a patchwork scholarship grid, but we did finally get under the limit for 2017. The 2018 situation is a mess though. Here is the official roster before we look at the scholarship grid:

And now, some notes:

· This confirms that Terrance Landers, Fred Brown, Malik Kimbrough, Jalen Neal, Dezwan Polk-Campbell, Keyante Green, Tim Faison, and David Yancey are gone. Kimbrough, Neal, Polk-Campbell, Green, and Yancey were all seniors that were not expected to contribute much this year, if at all.

· The only player that was really expected to contribute much was Landers, who played a little last year as a true freshman, but was a casualty much earlier in the summer.

· Incoming kicker Spencer Evans was not on the roster yet because he had not finished his paperwork, but he is coming and he will be on scholarship as we reported earlier.

· After all of this, Purdue has two open scholarships for this season. That means we can award a couple of walk-ons that have earned it over time. If you’re looking for candidates, Garrett Hudson, Race Johnson, and Eric Swingler would be strong choices. Johnson and Hudson are seniors that have played a fair amount, and them getting the two spots doesn’t impact the grid next year. Swingler is a junior.

· Will Colmery and Andy Chelf, two guys very questionable for the season due to off the field injuries, are still on the roster.

· With 21 commitments on board and coach Brohm still actively recruiting Purdue is up against it numbers-wise for the 2018 season. We’re right now 6 over the limit and could be close to 10 over once the recruiting class is finalized. Remember: three of the graduate transfers (Corey Holmes, Shave Evans, and Spencer Evans) have two years of eligibility left, so they count against 2018 as well.

· This means more attrition is coming. Your guess is as good as mine there, but clearly we have guys that will have to fight not only for playing time, but for a spot on the team itself. It is almost certain that some will see the writing on the wall and transfer elsewhere, but any number of things can happen. Most teams have some attrition between seasons due to injuries, transfers, academics, etc.
