B1G: Ranking the Mascots

New, 57 comments

It is pretty top heavy, after 6, it is pretty weak.

Editor’s Note: The contents of this article do not reflect the views of the Hammer & Rails or Purdue community. We all know the Boilermaker Special is the true mascot (except Kyle, the author of this article) and Purdue Pete is our Big Ten Overlord. Hail Pete.

It is officially dead season. But, the hype around Purdue Football has kept us pretty busy. Especially the 21 commits that we have had since June.

But, there still is only so much you can talk about. So, here we are, ranking the B1G mascots.

14) Indiana Hoosiers: Mascot - None

When you don’t have a mascot and you are the Hoosiers, you get ranked last.

13) University of Michigan: Mascot - None

This is too bad. But, if you don’t have a mascot, you get ranked at the bottom.

12) Penn State: Mascot - Nittany Lion

NCAA Football: Michigan State at Penn State Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Penn State could have a great mascot. But, instead they go with this. Penn State’s mascot does not represent their football team at all. He looks very docile, friendly and you could even hug him. They should have went with something ferocious, but here we are.

11) Nebraska : Mascot - Herbie Husker

NCAA Football: Michigan State at Nebraska Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

While I don’t really mind Herbie all that much, he just looks so damn friendly. Also, wearing the Dad jeans drops him a few spots for me. Yes, he is supposed to look like a farmer, I get it. But the appeal just is not there for me on this one. He is a bottom half mascot for a reason.

10) Maryland: Mascot - Testudo

NCAA Football: Quick Lane Bowl-Boston College vs Maryland Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Just your friendly, neighborhood Terrapin. Testudo, as they call him is just a friendly little guy. Why could he not be this:

NOW THAT WOULD MAKE HIM NUMBER 1!

9) Illinois: Mascot - Chief Illiniwek

No picture found that I can use because it is frowned upon to use an Indian as a sport team’s mascot or logo now. But, he is pretty cool, do a quick google search of him!

8) Northwestern: Mascot - Willie the Wildcat

NCAA Basketball: Big Ten Tournament-Northwestern vs Maryland Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The mascots are slowly but surely improving. Willie has a pretty sissy type name, but look at that face on him. He looks great. Northwestern has picked up steam in football and basketball in recent years, making Willie a now more noticeable mascot. Willie strikes fear into.... well no one.

7) Rutgers: Mascot - The Scarlet Knight

NCAA Football: Indiana at Rutgers Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Cut Rutgers some slack. This is the highest they have been ranked in a big time ranking in years! The Scarlet Knight got a makeover recently (2015) as “The student body wanted more ethnic and gender diversity in their mascot”. That is how you know they take this guy serious. When you call for a change for no reason, you deserved to be ranked in the top half of the B1G.

6) Ohio State: Mascot - Brutus the Buckeye

NCAA Football: Michigan at Ohio State Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Brutus is an iconic mascot in the entire college football world. Brutus has been around forever now, with little to no changes. The old school solid stripe long sleeve shirt is fantastic. Who doesn’t love the gigantic Buckeye head? It is fantastic.

5) Wisconsin: Mascot - Bucky the Badger

NCAA Football: Cowboys Classic-Wisconsin vs Alabama Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Bucky roams Camp Randall Stadium with such grace. he is loved by all of the fans.He is kind of ugly and looking back, I probably would have ranked him lower. But he is a great mascot with a lot of enthusiasm. Maybe he shows it most at Ross-Ade because they are always running for 250 or more on us.

4) Iowa: Mascot - Herky the Hawkeye

NCAA Football: Iowa at Rutgers Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Herky is quite honestly one of the best looking mascots in the B1G. His face isn’t terrifying, but it shows a little bit of grit and attitude. But not too much to where little kids do not want a picture with him. Herky is easily in the top half of the B1G just based on what he wears every game.

3) Purdue: Mascot - Purdue Pete

NCAA Football: Purdue at Illinois Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

Look deep into those eyes. Fall in love with those eyes. Sure, I am partial here. Some think Pete is one of the worst with his creepy face. But, what other mascot walks around with a freaking hammer. Oh that’s right. Just Pete. He is great with interacting with fans, taking pictures with little kids and just having energy. Pete is just great overall.

BY THE WAY, I KNOW PETE IS NOT THE OFFICIAL MASCOT IT IS THE BOILERMAKER SPECIAL.

I have tried to put a picture here, but if you search “Boilermaker Special” we get no usable options. So, for the sake of this post. Pete gets number 3. If I did rank the special, it would be lower, FWIW.

2) Minnesota: Mascot - Goldy the Gopher

NCAA Football: Minnesota at Wisconsin Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Goldy probably has the best uniform. The big gopher head with the football uniform is top notch. I had Purdue Pete here, but when I looked at Goldy’s uniform again, I had to flip flop the two. You can bet your butt that Goldy will be rowing his boat this upcoming season as well.

1) Michigan State: Mascot - Sparty

NCAA Football: Big Ten Championship-Iowa vs Michigan State Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Listen. I hate MSU just as much as you do. But, Sparty is a great mascot. he is intimidating, big, and has a great look to him. He is also friendly and is fun to interact with. Watching he and Pete battle it out at basketball or football games is worth the price of admission in its self.

That is my list. What do you think? What does your guy’s list looks like?
