Because backup, walk-on punters need love too.

The spring game was the showcase for today’s player. It is not often that a backup punter is called on. Joe Schopper has the starting job nailed down for the immediate future, but during the spring game we got some backup walk-on punter love.

Herr joined the team as a walk-on last in 2015 and, as most walk-on specialists do, did not factor in to the team much. As mentioned, Schopper had the job. In this year’s spring game, however, Herr showcased a big leg. There were no official stats kept for punts, but during those sessions Herr generally outperformed Schopper.

In high school Herr played for state power Carmel, twice reaching the state championship game in Class 6A. He also played tight end, catching two passes for 22 yards and a touchdown as a senior.

With Schopper entering his junior season it is possible Herr will be the starter in two years as a fifth year senior.
