And so the countdown begins! Over the next three months we will once again be profiling the members of the football team based on their number corresponding with the days remaining until our September 2 kickoff at Lucas Oil Stadium against Louisville. We won’t get to everyone because the freshmen’s numbers have not been listed on the official roster yet, but we will try and do what we can. As soon as the freshmen are listed we’ll start getting them on the countdown.
So let’s begin.
Kai Higgins – So.
Pomona, Ca (Chaffey College)
6’4”, 247 pounds
2017 Projection: Contributor at Defensive End
Higgins is one of many JuCo/graduate transfer newcomers brought in by coach Brohm to be immediate starters or contributors due to the sheer dearth of talent. He only played one season at Chaffey College, so he has three years of eligibility left.
Chaffey College is based in Rancho Cucamonga, California and plays in a decently competitive JuCo League. Their page is not very well updated, but they were supposedly 2-5 with the results of four games not listed. A more accurate schedule had them at 3-7 with the defense giving up 34.7 points per game. Higgins reportedly finished the year with 25 tackles and three sacks. He also had a blocked kick.
Higgins does have good size for a defensive end, and we do need bodies there, especially with Gelen Robinson moving inside to defensive tackle. There is an opportunity for playing time if Higgins can seize it.
We’ll be saying that a lot in this countdown.
