Last week’s chaos benefits Purdue.

NCAA Basketball: Indiana - Purdue at Purdue Sandra Dukes-USA TODAY Sports

Last week was a bloodbath for many teams around college basketball. The following ranked teams lost last week:

No. 1 Duke (at Boston College)

No. 2 Kansas (Washington and Arizona State)

No. 5 Florida (Florida State and Loyola-IL)

No. 7 Texas A&M (Arizona)

No. 9 Notre Dame (Ball State)

No. 12 Gonzaga (Villanova)

No. 14 Minnesota (at Nebraska and at Arkansas)

No. 15 Virginia (at West Virginia)

No. 17 Cincinnati (Florida)

No. 22 Nevada (at Texas Tech, TCU)

No. 25 USC (Oklahoma)

For some like Texas A&M, Florida, Minnesota, and USC it showed they were wildly overrated. Others just had inexplicable dicktrips like Notre Dame and (again) Florida. Most importantly, the name missing from that list was No. 21 Purdue, who took care of business by 55 total points. That means the chaos moves us up.

Here are this week’s rankings with first place votes and total points:

  1. Villanova (41) 1,598
  2. Michigan State (19) 1,561
  3. Wichita State 1,402
  4. Duke 1,362
  5. Arizona State 1,316
  6. Miami (FL) 1,272
  7. North Carolina 1,237
  8. Kentucky 1,227
  9. Texas A&M 1,072
  10. Xavier 1,044
  11. West Virginia 972
  12. Gonzaga 805
  13. Kansas 760
  14. TCU 718
  15. Seton Hall 704
  16. Virignia 690
  17. Purdue 568
  18. Notre Dame 564
  19. Florida State 452
  20. Tennessee 342
  21. Baylor 281
  22. Florida 261
  23. Arizona 252
  24. Texas Tech 191
  25. Cincinnati 145

Arizona moving into the top 25 officially gives us a top 25 win again. Florida dropped from no. 5 to 22 and Notre Dame dropped from 9 to 18.

In the Coaches Poll Purdue managed to only move up 4 spots to No. 17:

  1. Villanova (22) 790
  2. Michigan State (10) 768
  3. Wichita State 675
  4. Duke 667
  5. Kentucky 609
  6. Arizona State 604
  7. North Carolina 593
  8. Miami (FL) 569
  9. Xavier 529
  10. Texas A&M 495
  11. West Virginia 477
  12. Kansas 378
  13. Gonzaga 374
  14. TCU 373
  15. Seton Hall 360
  16. Virginia 355
  17. Purdue 303
  18. Notre Dame 247
  19. Florida State 209
  20. Tennessee 153
  21. Baylor 150
  22. Florida 111
  23. Arizona 106
  24. Oklahoma 85
  25. Creighton 75

In the coaches poll Minnesota, Cincinnati, UCLA, Nevada, and USC dropped out.
