National Signing Day is next Wednesday, February 1st. As of right now, we are sitting at 15 commitments for the 2017 class. So it begs the question; What will make this class a great first class for Coach Brohm?
Here is a breakdown of what I think we need to make this a solid first class in the Brohm era.
Running Back:
I understand, we have a stable of running backs at Purdue already, Markell, Knox, BLJ, Green, Worship & Fuller (my favorite player).
But we do not have anyone committed to play running back for the 2017 class as of right now, we do have interest from the #1 JuCo athlete who would presumably play RB at the next level. I get that we have so many RBS on the rsoter already, but you just can’t pass up the chance to get the #1 JuCo athletem, maybe he will come and play slot receiver.
Octavius Matthews tweeted us in his top 3 last night, shortly after decommiting from Auburn.
After having a long talk with my family as of today theses are my top three school I will be choosing from Feb1st.. pic.twitter.com/Vd5Q20WsBJ

Defensive Tackle:
We had Dante Johnson and Malcolm Robinson. Those two are gone now. Coach has to start over and hope we land a couple of interior defensive lineman by next Wednesday.
Supposedly, Eddy Wilson is back, which will help tremendously, after the season I heard that he was leaving the program for personal reasons. Here are some names to watch over the next week for the interior defensive line position:
Travon Mathis - 6’3”, 250 pounds, 3* DE/DT from Alabama. Some of his other offers are Louisville, Georgia Tech & WKU, if we could land him late that would be tremendous late recruiting snag, he would add depth immediately to the roster.
Daviyon Nixon- 6’4”, 285 pounds, 3* DE/DT from Wisconsin. At 285 pounds, I don’t see him as an end more of a DT. But, he has many offers, if we land him this would be a steal. He is ranked #7 in Wisconsin currently, he holds offers from Iowa, Western Michigan and Wisconsin has showed interest.
Defensive Back:
We already have 3 guys committed for 2017. Dedrick Mackey, TJ Jallow and Jacob Abrams. Abrams was relatively unknown until Brohm came to campus. Jallow was rated a 4* by ESPN and came from Last Chance U, he is already on campus. Mackey is a perfect fit by name, he is rated a 3* prospect by Rivals. We need a couple of more and here are names being thrown around.
Corey Winfield- A 6’ grad transfer who had success at Syracuse, would be a welcomed addition to the secondary, I would imagine an automatic starter too. He was recruited out of high school as a wide receiver, he shows a great leaping ability & ball skills at corner, so he being a former receiver makes sense. In 32 games played at Cuse, he racked up 85 tackles. With being a grad transfer, he doesn’t have to decide by next Wednesday and has openly said he will take visits after the signing day.
Mykelti Williams- A former Notre Dame commit, Williams went JuCo after one year at ND, don’t blame him. I would be surprised if we don’t get him. He has visited campus a couple of times already, but has said he is waiting for signing day to make his final choice. At 6’1” 210 pounds, he would be nice next to Jallow, Williams was a former 4* and top 250 player out of high school.
A secondary of Hunte, Winfield, Williams and Jallow has me salivating. Those are some grown men.
Those are just a few needs, if you think of something else, feel free to make a suggestion in the comment box, or if you know of anyone else visiting before NSD, let us know. Boiler up!
