55 Days to Purdue Basketball: Spike Albrecht

What better way to celebrate Purdue football’s bye week than by kicking off our countdown to Purdue basketball? We’re 55 days away from a new season, and hopefully it is one of redemption after That Game. Let’s begin with one of the newest players on the roster, who will be wearing jersey No. 55.

Spike Albrecht – Grad Student

Crown Point, IN (Crown Point HS)

It is hard to say how much of a role Albrecht will have this season. The transfer from Michigan played in only 8 games last year before shutting things down due to a double hip surgery. That led to an unexpected fifth season this year, where he decided to join us as a graduate transfer.

Albrecht’s career was definitely varied. Since he took a postgraduate year after high school and he is now a 5th year college player he will be the oldest player in the Big Ten at age 24. He played sparingly as a freshman in 2012-13, but went crazy in the national title game against Louisville with 17 points as the Wolverines almost won it all. Since then he has started a handful of games and was the team MVP for Michigan in 2014-15.

Last season he shut it down after 8 games and looked like his career was over, but he chose to give it one more shot since he got an NCAA injury waiver. He had career best averages of 7.5 points and 3.9 assists in 2014-15.

Albrecht is still facing questions of his health, but he is not going to have to play the 32 minutes per game he was playing for Michigan as a junior before surgery. He should serve as a calming veteran presence that has played in big games his whole career. He adds three-point shooting as well by going 79 of 198 in his career from long range. He has 235 career assists, which is more than anyone on Purdue’s roster.
