Week 3 Big Ten Preview

Purdue goes undefeated this week!

Michigan State v Notre Dame

Purdue will not lose this week! In fact, tomorrow morning I am going to fire up NCAA 2014, get back into my long forgotten dynasty somewhere in the 2017 season, and beat… somebody. I think this is why I keep the game, because I want to remember what it is like to hear the train horn sound at Ross-Ade.

Indiana and Minnesota join us on the sidelines this week, and it could be a rough one for the Big Ten.

New Mexico (1-1) at Rutgers (1-1) Noon, BTN

On the Banks Preview

The new guys will kick things off for us with a game they should win, but if they lose it is a very bad sign. New Mexico lost to in-state rival and future FBS vagabond New Mexico State last week. NMSU is getting kicked out of the Sun Belt and really has no conference to go to if they choose to stay up at the FBS level. The fact that they still beat New Mexico is probably a bad sign for New Mexico coach Bob Davie (yes! He is still around!). I thank bob Davie for starting the Joe Tiller miracle turnaround, but I don’t think he has enough to win this one. Rutgers 24, New Mexico 14

Temple (1-1) at Penn State (1-1) Noon, BTN

Black Shoe Diaries Preview

The only way Penn State could be more offensive when it comes to this game is if they had Bill Cosby be the honorary cheerleading captain for Temple. Honoring Paterno before the game is repugnant and incredibly tone deaf. I will honor him by looking away from this one. Temple 24, Penn State 21

North Dakota State (2-0) at No. 13 Iowa (2-0) Noon, ESPN2

Black Heart Gold Pants Preview

Last year Iowa hosted the FCS runner-up in an intriguing game and pulled away late. Now they host the 5-time defending FCS champs and have to be fully on upset alert. NDSU is 8-3 all-time against the FBS, has won five in a row, and have already beaten a Big Ten team (twice!) in Minnesota. You schedule them at your own peril, really. Iowa should win, but I would not be shocked at all if NDSU pulled this off. Oh, and they have gotten a guaranteed $1.675 million in those five straight FBS wins. Iowa 27, North Dakota State 24

Georgia State (0-2) at No. 9 Wisconsin (2-0) Noon, BTN

Bucky’s Fifth Quarter Preview

Georgia State will be playing in an old baseball stadium next season, as they have reached an agreement to take over Turner Field when the Braves leave and turn it into their home football stadium. That is probably the most interesting thing about this game as the Badgers should roll. Wisconsin 45, Georgia State 10

Colorado (2-0) at No. 4 Michigan (2-0) 3:30pm, BTN

Maize N’ Brew Preview

I kind of hope Michigan drops an unexpected game because of Harbaugh. I can’t believe he has a stick up his ass about Colorado’s fake depth chart this week, which is legitimately funny except for the super serious business of football. Ah well. At least it was entertaining for a game that Michigan should win easily. Michigan 38, Colorado 14

No. 22 Oregon (2-0) at Nebraska (2-0) 3:30pm, ABC

Corn Nation Preview

This should be a pretty good game. Oregon’s offense is not the usual death machine it is, and the run defense is a little bit suspect. That has the Cornhuskers as a three point favorite at home even if they did struggle with Wyoming a little last week before pulling away. We could have points and a lot of them in this game. Nebraska 42, Oregon 35

Western Michigan (2-0) at Illinois (1-1) 4pm, ESPNNews

The Champaign Room Preview

Here is another chance to scout 2017 Purdue football head coach P.J. Fleck! Not only can the Broncos set the table for a potential undefeated season with a win in this one, it would give Fleck as many Big Ten wins in one season as Dollar Bill Darrell has in over three years in West Lafayette. Of course, one of Hazell’s very few wins was over Fleck, but since then Fleck is 20-9 with a bowl win and a win at Northwestern. Western Michigan is even a three point favorite! Western Michigan 28, Illinois 20

Maryland (2-0) at Central Florida (1-1) 7pm, CBS Sports Network

Testudo Times Preview

So far the Terps have looked pretty good, and that is not a good sign for Purdue’s Big Ten opener. They are blowing out lesser competition and since Central Florida was unwinfeated last year that could mean a 3-0 start with a pair of true road victories in Florida. Maryland is probably a bowl team if it wins this game. Maryland 37, Central Florida 30

No. 12 Michigan State (1-0) at No. 18 Notre Dame (1-1) 7:30pm, NBC

The Only Colors Preview

The Spartans have had a week off to prepare for the renewal of this rivalry, and it should be a fun night game. Michigan State has some payback here, as their last game with the Irish cost them a shot at the National title in 2013. That 17-13 win by Notre Dame in South Bend with the aid of some questionable officiating was the only loss in a 13-1 season for Michigan State. It is hard to gauge MSU this year, but Notre Dame’s defense is not good. Michigan State 31, Notre Dame 28

No. 3 Ohio State (2-0) at No. 14 Oklahoma (1-1) 7:30pm, FOX

Land-Grant Holyland Preview

The Buckeyes look like they haven’t missed a beat so far. They throttled a pair of teams at home and now they get a true road game against a ranked team trying to avoid falling to 1-2 early in the year. This is your national game of the week too, and that usually means Ohio State is going to make a statement. All the Buckeyes do is stay in the national title picture as the East looks like it will be a three-way Mexican Standoff this year. I don’t envy trying to figure out that tiebreaker when Michigan State beat Ohio State and loses to Michigan, but Ohio State beats Michigan. Ohio State 34, Oklahoma 28

Duke (1-1) at Northwestern (0-2) 8pm, BTN

InsideNU Preview

Please take note, Mike Bobinski. Northwestern also lacks lights for its stadium like Purdue, but they actively pursued this game to create a “game atmosphere”, something your predecessor feared. BTN does not pay for temporary lights, so this was all Northwestern wanting to do something special. This NERD BOWL is basically Northwestern’s last stand. Another loss completely derails their season. Duke 22, Northwestern 21
