The night is dark and full of terrors over on the West Coast. That terror is, of course, the Purdue women’s volleyball team. The ladies headed out to Stanford last night to take part in the Stanford Invitational and opened with the host Cardinal last night. Purdue is ranked 20th, but Stanford is a long-time national power and came in ranked 9th nationally.
Well, this will turn some heads. After losing the first two sets 33-31 and 25-12 Purdue barely hung on to take set 3 25-23 and set 4 28-26. In the winner-take-all-fifth set Purdue won again 15-11 to comeback and the upset.
Make no mistake, this is a HUGE result for a young team like Purdue. The Boilers’ only loss was to No. 25 Kentucky in a similar match where the Boilers also fell behind 0-2 before forcing a fifth set. In that match Purdue lost, barely, but winning on the road against a top national team before the Big Ten season is huge.
Purdue faces Cal Poly at Stanford today. Next week they get another shot at a top 10 team when No. 4 Kansas comes to Purdue.
