It never seems like we get early commits and it remains the same for this class. Painter does a great job of finding his guys, Carsen Edwards for the class of 2016 went under the radar, but ended up being ranked a 4* on most recruiting sites. We don't always land the 5* guys, but we hardly ever have duds.
This 2017 class is loaded and CMP has plenty of offers out to prove that. Many are in state kids, which always seem to leave the state for basketball, hopefully, much like Caleb Swanigan, CMP can lure one of these big name in state athletes to stick around.
Let's take a look at who has been offered.
Player | High School | Rating (247 Sports) | Other Offers | Comments |
Paul Scruggs | Southport High School, Indianapolis | 4* | IU, Michigan State, Kansas, Xavier | Scruggs is a great point guard prospect. He is a player that will want to play and start from day 1. A ball dominate type guard that can and will make plays. While I would love a verbal from him, I think he takes his talent to one of the other schools I listed. With PJ back for a Senior year in 2017 and Carsen being a Sophomore, I don't think he would like the idea of coming to campus third on the depth chart. |
Tremont Waters | South Kent High School, Connecticut | 4* | Duke, UCONN, Kentucky, Kansas | I love that we are going after guards that have big time offers, such as Duke, Kentucky and Kansas. But, I think our situation is similar here with another guard that will want to go to a team and contribute right away. He is a smaller guard, at 5'11" but he is very athletic. |
C.J. Roberts | Richland High School, Texas | 3* | Illinois, Kansas State, Baylor, Alabama | I like our chance a little bit more with C.J. than the first two guards I listed. He is a nice sized point guard at 6'2" and while he is a little raw, he could have a redshirt season while PJ has his Senior season and Carsen getting majority of the back up minutes. |
Nate Pierre-Louis | Roselle Catholic High School, New Jersey | 3* | UCONN, FSU, Vanderbilt, Iowa State | Nate is another good sized point guard at 6'3". He isn't a great shooter but a great athlete. According to 247 Sports he is leaning to a verbal to UCONN which is closer to home. Vanderbilt just came in and gave him an offer not to long ago as well. |
Jordan Goodwin | Althoff Catholic High School, Illinois | 4* | Illinois, Alabama, Mizzou, Iowa | According to 247 Sports, we are "warm" on Jordan's radar. It would make sense to get another shooting guard in this class as Dakota would be a Senior and Cline a Junior. At any given time you can put 2-4 guards on the court and spread a team out also. The more shooters the better in my opinion. |
Kris Wilkes | North Central High School, Indianapolis | 5* | Butler, IU, Marlyand, UCLA ... Pretty much everyone in the United States | Kris would be one of these big time in state kids that we need to keep here. I would hate for him to stay here and go to IU, but at least he would stay in the state of Indiana. He has offers from all over the nation, I did read that if Kentucky doesn't offer soon though, he will not even consider them. He will take his recruitment into the spring, I hope we snag him, but it doesn't seem likely. |
Jaren Jackson | Park Tudor, Indianapolis | 5* | Maryland, IU, Michigan, Michigan State | This is the guy that Painter has been after for years. Supposedly, someone on our staff pretty much contacts him every single day. Which they should if we want to stay in the competition for him. He doesn't have as many offers as Wilkes, but personally I like him a bit more. He stands at 6'10", could play the 3, 4 or 5 and as an athletic freak. I hope Painter and Co. stays on him until the day he verbals, because we need him in the old gold & black, especially if Vince Edwards leaves a year early for the NBA. |
Nojel Eastern | Evanston Township High School, Illinois | 4* | Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois, USC | We got on his trail later than some, but none the less we are on it and we are "warm" on 247 Sports. At 6'6 I would assume he is more of a slashing wing rather than a pure shooter. I couldn't find any highlights on him, but if we lose out on the Jaren Jackson race, he could be a good guy to replace Vince (if he leaves early) or play some back up minutes his freshman year. |
Kyle Young | Jackson High School, Ohio | 4* | Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois | On his highlight tape it seems like Young was playing under the basket a lot for his high school, which might have been the case as he is 6'7". But there were plenty of times where he stepped out and drilled a three. I would like him a lot as a stretch 4 type player rather than a small forward, as at small forward he could get exposed defensively. |
Xavier Tillman | Grand Rapids Christian High School, Michigan | 4* | Illinois, Kentucky, Notre Dame | It's strange, he doesn't have a lot of offers according to 247 Sports, but his offers he has are from big schools. I like Tillman a lot, he reminds of me Swanigan a bit, but just a little ore athletic and not as thick. AT 6'8" 235 he is an undersized power forward (NBA terms) but has the thickness to hold his own on the boards. Painter has been on him heavy, it will be hard to fend off UK though. |
Theo John | Champlin Park Senior High School, Minnesota | 4* | Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Iowa | Theo looks like he could be the one to replace Biggie. I think we can all agree with saying Biggie will be gone after next season, barring a horrific Sophomore slump. Theo isn't as thick as Tillman, but he brings so much athleticism to the court. Painter has been on his trail heavy, watching some AAU games as of late and staying in touch. I would love a Theo John verbal. |
Ikechukwu Obiagu | Greenforest Christian High School, Georgia | 4* | Arizona, Baylor, Maryland, Louisville | If you want to be a successful big man come to West Lafayette. Ask JJ, Hammons, Haas and Swanigan to an extent. We are one of the few schools in the nation that focus the center as the primary source on offense. At 7' 230 pounds his build is a lot like AJ.. his Junior season. We will need another big man soon, as Haas only has two years left, maybe one. |
Malik Williams | R. Nelson Snider High School, Fort Wayne | 4* | Michigan State, Illinois, IU, Iowa | It seems as if the entire B1G is after Malik. It would be a fantastic verbal for Coach Painter if we could add another skilled 7 footer. He is thin at only 200 pounds, but he could easily put some weight on and be fine. Similar to what I previously said, if you are a big man and want to be successful come to West Lafayette. |
