59 Days to Purdue Football: Langston Newton

The senior from Carmel showed some promise in limited action last season.

Today we have a senior on the roster. He hasn't contributed a ton so far, but with Randy Melvin back coaching the defensive backs it is hoped he can have a big sendoff.

Langston Newton -€” Sr.

Carmel, IN (Carmel HS)

6'3", 275 pounds

Defensive End

2016 Projection: Contributor at defensive end

Coming out of high school Newton was one of the top rated players in the state of Indiana. He was a HS teammate of Jimmy Herman and Race Johnson at Carmel and a huge part of their state championship in his senior year. He later added two more state titles in the shot put and discus in track and field.

Newton then went to Kentucky where his older brother was quarterback, but it did not work out. He transferred to Purdue and last season was his first on the field for the Boilers. In a total of three games he had one tackle, half a sack, two pass breakups, and a fumble recovery at Marshall. Like many things from last season, he showed a ton of promise in that Marshall game but the coaching staff actively went away from what was working afterwards.

Newton should at least be on the depth chart going into his final season. I expect him to be a quality reserve at defensive end.
