46 Days to Purdue Football: Race Johnson

The older brother of diver Steele Johnson has already earned playing time as a walk-on.

"Yeah, I know I might when a pair of golds in Rio, but my brother is a pretty good football player!"

Today we get to continue the parade of former Carmel HS football players. We also have the rare walk-on that has worked his way up to steady playing time:

Race Johnson -€” Jr.

Carmel, IN (Carmel HS)

5'11", 183 pounds

Cornerback

2016 Projection: Contributor at cornerback/special teams

You may not know Race very well, but in a few weeks is brother will be all over the pages here at Hammer & Rails. Race is the older brother of NCAA champion diver Steele Johnson, who will compete in the Rio Olympics in a few weeks before returning to Purdue in the fall. Race has made a name for himself by walking on to the football team and even earning some playing time last fall. He played in a total of three games, mostly on special teams, and notched one tackle.

This summer Race was also named as a student intern for communications by the athletic department. As for this coming fall, Race should be at least a special teams contributor. Having spent time on the two deep last season at cornerback he may even get some playing time with the regular defense.
