Purdue's amazing 2012 season continues to produce, as Nick Wittgren, the excellent closer that had a 1.76 ERA in 26 outings with 10 saves and a 3-0 record that season, got the call he has been waiting for today:
Roster Moves:
— Miami Marlins (@Marlins) April 19, 2016
• Edwin Jackson placed on 15-day DL, retro to 4/18, w/ right triceps strain
• Nick Wittgren recalled from AAA @zephyrsbaseball
Wittgren was a 9th round selection in the 2012 MLB draft by Miami and has been solid at every stop in the minors. Last season he was 1-6 in 51 appearances with the New Orleans Zephyrs in triple-A. His ERA was a good 3.03 with 19 saves, however. This season he had made four appearances and had already earned a save when he got the call.
As it happens, I will be in Miami and at the game on Thursday when Wittgren could potentially make his MLB debut if he doesn't tonight's or tomorrow. He joins Kevin Palwecki as Boilers in The Show, giving Purdue two current Major Leaguers for the first time in decades. he is the 8th drafted Purdue player to make the Show, joining the following:
Matt Kinzer (1984 Draft)
Elam Rossi (1985 Draft)
Archi Cianfrocco (1987 Draft)
Jermaine Allensworth (1993 Draft)
Dave Gassner (2001 Draft)
Jay Buente (2006 Draft)
Kevin Plawecki (2012 Draft)
