Kendall Stephens has asked for his release to potentially pursue a transfer, but the door is open for his return.

This is a weird one. According to a release I just received, Kendall Stephens has been granted his released to possibly transfer from Purdue. It is easier to just post the full release here:

Purdue head coach Matt Painter has announced that Kendall Stephens has been granted his request for a transfer release.

Stephens will be given the chance to explore the possibility to transfer, but the door remains open for him to return to Purdue for his senior campaign in 2016-17.

"Kendall has asked for his release to explore the possibility of transferring, but he remains a member of our team and the door remains open for his return," Painter said. "Right now, he is weighing his options."

So, that means Kendall is still at Purdue and can return. He is currently considered a member of the team, but is exploring his options. He would be Purdue's lone scholarship senior during the 2016-17 season.

I am of two schools on this. On the one hand, I can understand it. Something was off for him late last season and he was mired on the bench because of it. He has fallen behind Dakota Mathias and Ryan Cline for minutes, and likely doesn't want to come back and ride the bench.

On the other, he went through some serious mental shit in losing his friend and it effected him greatly. I don't blame him for still sorting things out.

I think Kendall can return and have a great senior season. I like the athleticism he showed at times this past year and feel he can be a major contributor for a special year. I would welcome him back with open arms and I know most Purdue fans are behind him.

It is up to him though.
