2016 Indiana High School Basketball State Tournament: Sectional Night 1

The IHSAA state tournament is officially underway and Purdue's targets did well last night.

The 2016 IHSAA State tournament got underway last night with games at 64 sectional sites around Indiana. With that, several potential future Boilermakers began (or ended) their quest for a state title. Here is a quick rundown of last night's scores, with some notes if there is a recruit or a big upset among the results:

Class 4A

East Chicago Central: Lowell 61, Lake Central 44

Crown Point: Valparaiso 66, Merrillville 59 (OT) - the No. 2 team in Class 4A goes down! Merrillville was 22-1 coming into the tournament and had beaten Valpo 75-71 on January 29.

Plymouth: South Bend Riley 53, LaPorte 48

Elkhart Central: Penn 55, Northridge 48

DeKalb: Carroll 64, Fort Wayne Snider 45; FW Northrop 63, East Noble 54 - Snider a 6'10" 4-star Purdue target Malik Williams were no match for Carroll. Williams had only nine points in the loss.

Huntington North: FW South 72, Jay County 69 (OT); Homestead 42, Huntington North 40

Logansport: Zionsville 80, Kokomo 54; McCutcheon 71, Logansport 48 - P.J. Thompson's little brother Isaiah helped Zionsville completely crushed my beloved Wildkats. Isaiah Thompson had 11 points and took advantage of Kokomo playing no defense at all.

In the second game Robert Phinisee, a top 2018 target, had 26 points for McCutcheon and Logansport's Jalen Adaway, a 2017 possibility, had 26 for Logansport.

Noblesville: Fishers 58, Westfield 53

New Castle: Greenfield Central 51, Richmond 42; New Castle 84, Pendleton Heights 69

Indianapolis Tech: Lawrence Central 77, Indianapolis Tech 55; North Central 58, Cathedral 54 - One of Purdue's top 2017 targets in Kris Wilkes moves on with 19 points for North Central, who is now 20-3 and one of the favorites to win it all if they survive this meat grinder of a sectional. This is still one of the toughest sectionals in Indiana, and former Purdue commit C.J. Walker saw his HS career end on his home floor. Eron Gordon, who has been on Purdue's 2016 radar for awhile, had only 11 points against his former team in Cathedral's loss.

Southport: Southport 53, Pike 46; Ben Davis, Perry Meridian 35 - Butler commit Joey Brunk had 24 points and Paul Scruggs, a 2017 Purdue target, had 12 points and 11 rebounds as Southport beat Pike for the first time in 16 years.

Terre Haute North: TH South 48, Mooresville 46; Avon 77, TH North 61

Martinsville: Center Grove 63, Whiteland 52; Greenwood 63, Martinsville 60 OT

East Central: Bloomington North 47, East Central 31; Columbus North 59, Columbus East 50

Seymour: Floyd Central 39, Seymour 38; Jeffersonville 68, Bedford North Lawrence 49

Evansville North: Castle 75, Evansville Central 67

Class 3A

Griffith: Lighthouse CPA 74, Hammond Gavit 71 OT; Griffith 78,Hammond Clark 51

Rensselaer Central: Rensselaer Central 55, Wheeler 47; Twin Lakes 74, Calumet 46

Jimtown: Mishawaka Marian 62, John Glenn 40; Culver Academy 56, Jimtown 55

Benton Central: Benton Central 64, Peru 59 OT; Western 57, West Lafayette 56 OT - Nai Carlisle, a San Jose State signee, finished with 20 points for West Lafayette as Western pulled off a mild upset.

NorthWood: NorthWood 79, West Noble 38; Tippecanoe Valley 47, Wawasee 42

New Haven: FW Dwenger 74, FW Concordia 56; Angola 70, Garrett 46
