Purdue Football Recruiting: Scholarship Grid Update

Where does Purdue stand in terms of its scholarship numbers as Jeff Brohm tries to finish the class.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

It has been awhile since we have done any sort of scholarship grid update around here, but I had some free time this afternoon to take a look at it. I am going to try and break this down by classes, and this includes the players that held on to their redshirts this past year. By my count Purdue currently has 79 of 85 scholarships spoken for. This includes the incoming recruiting class, but that number could shift based on a variety of factors. We will see.

The outgoing senior class is 17 strong as of right now. There are a few caveats in here, however. Polk, Daniels, Green, Hardy, and Neal all played very little or not at all this past season. Daniels has played maybe once in his career. Hardy missed the entire year with a shoulder injury. Neal was just awful as a JuCo transfer. Green has been buried for two years now. The same is true with Polk. Kimbrough, brought in for kickoff and punt returns, was off of kickoff and punt returns by the end of the season, but at least had a few moments.

Overall the senior class is pretty thin, as can be expected when this was Hazell's first recruiting class and he was a very poor recruiter.

Here is where we have some speculation. Patterson and Roberts were both starters that were suspended for the entire second half of the season. Patterson for his assault charges and Roberts reasons that were never made clear. Both would expect to still be starters if they return, but that is just not known right now.

At a few other spots you have some fourth year guys that have played little if at all. Yacoobi, Jones, and Colmery come to mind though Colmery missed this entire season after a brain tumor, so he gets a pass. In fact, it is a question on if he will even return. Simmons is a JuCo defensive end that did not play at all this past year, bust still has two years left. Also, for the record, the RS means a player has already used his redshirt year.

Here we have at least one player who will not be back and two more that are questionable. Evyn Cooper is no longer on the official roster and Rose was also suspended along with Roberts and Turner for undisclosed reasons (though we can guess why). Of the sophomores, eight are true sophomores that did not use their redshirt year this past season. That includes Wegher, who had his shirt removed very late in the season. If there is going to be a turnaround this is the group it will begin with.

All of these players redshirted this past season for one reason or another, so you don't know what to expect. Hermanns and Hawthorne will play on the offensive line almost out of necessity, especially if Patterson is not back. The same is true for Watts on the defensive line. Sparks is a pretty clear No. 3 quarterback going into next season, but that is not a bad thing. Fakasiieki was a linebacker that was practicing at tight end on the scout team, and we barely have any linebackers on the roster.

Obviously this class is in flux, but so far the only loss from the Hazell firing was Tennessee running back Antwaun Branch. There are several players here that will likely play immediately. Tyler Hamilton, Brevin Harris, and Jylton Tusha all could play, and even start, from day one. The same is true for Robert Hudson, a 6'8" 295 tackle that has "Starting tackle" all over him.

Summary

This is far from an official list, but as of right now, Purdue has six more scholarships to hand out. That can change. Roberts, Patterson, Rose, and Colmery could all be gone before spring practice. Any number of the redshirt seniors could transfer without penalty if they graduate in the spring. A few may just be done with football, too. I expect Purdue's recruiting class to be a round 20 members before all is said and done, and I can definitely see many of the remaining scholarships going to JuCos who can patch a few holes immediately.
