Welcome Jeff Brohm, the 36th head coach in the history of Purdue football dating back to its inception in 1887. Brohm enters trying to clean up the mess caused by Darrell Hazell (and Danny Hope and Morgan Burke). He needs to only win two games in his first season to have a better start than Hazell. He needs a single home Big Ten win to match the total of his predecessor.

Obviously, he has a long road ahead of him, but overall I think this is a good hire. Brohm is renowned for his offensive prowess as a head coach and in three years at Western Kentucky he has a 30-10 record with a pair of conference titles. His overall record is better than that of Hazell, who lucked into one good year at Kent State. the last two years he has gone 22-5 in winning Conference USA each time.

There are naturally questions. His defenses have been questionable at best, so a strong supporting staff on the defensive side of he ball is critical. He at least has an identity, however. That identity is to throw the ball around and score a lot of points. We can speculate on recruiting and wins later, but for now this at least looks promising, and not just because things can’t get much worse than 9-39 in the last four seasons.
