As we discussed yesterday, Purdue is stockpiling young talent at linebacker. If today's player is going to play he is going to have to beat out several incoming freshmen.
Dezwan Polk-Campbell - So.
Columbus, OH (Whetstone HS)
6'3", 212 pounds
Linebacker
2015 Projection: Contributor at Linebacker
Polk-Campbell was originally listed as a safety last season, where he saw action in four games on special teams. He has now shifted to linebacker, where he is currently listed as the backup on the depth chart to Jimmy Herman. He was also an academic all-Big Ten selection.
A lot of his PT will depend on if he can hold off the three freshman linebackers that are already impressing coaches. In high school he had 93 tackles, 34 for loss, and nine sacks. He was also a track standout, so his speed on the edge could be big. Unfortunately, he might have sustained a significant injury yesterday in practice:
Polk-Campbell was covering Herdman on his route over the middle and leaped to try to make a play. Polk-Campbell appeared to land awkwardly and was on the ground for an extended period of time - athletic trainers rushed to him, as did Hazell and linebackers coach Marcus Freeman. Freeman carried Polk-Campbell to the deep end zone out of play where he continued to be looked at by trainers.
