82 Days to Purdue Football: Alex Hilger

Hilger is a preferred walk-on from Massachusetts that came to Purdue after injuries hampered his HS career.

It wasn't until doing these series of posts that I realized we have a lot of walk-ons. For every Landon Feichter it feels like there are 10 guys like today's player: guys hoping to work hard and get a hint of playing time.

Alex Hilger - Fr. (RS)

Natick, Massachusetts (Natick HS)

6'2", 192 pounds

Wide Receiver

2015 Projection: Deep Reserve at Wide Receiver

At least Hilger is wearing the right number for a wide receiver, as there are a lot of Purdue fans that fondly remember John Standeford wearing No. 82 and catching pass after pass. As for Hilger, he comes from Natick, Massachusetts, which is not really a common place for walk-on football players, especially in the Big Ten. It sounds like he was pretty good there, however:

he 6-foot-2, 180-pounder was hampered by injuries in each of his last two seasons with the Redhawks, but gave his intent to join the Boilermakers with preferred walk-on status, announcing his decision Sunday via Twitter.

"I really felt that hindered my recruiting process immensely," Hilger said of his bouts with shoulder injuries in his junior and senior years. "I feel like I would have found some scholarship offers, and there was nothing."

Alex has some highlights on Hudl, and it seems like he could be an interesting addition after shoulder injuries hurt his recruiting process. He was a preferred walk-on too, so welcome aboard.
