Linc Darner Wins Division II National Championship With Florida Southern

The former Boiler coaches his team to a D-2 National title.

Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Purdue beat Indiana today to win a national championship in men's basketball!

Okay, it was a roundabout way of getting there, but Former Purdue point guard Linc Darner, who played for Gene Keady from 1990-94 and was a senior starter on the 1994 Big Ten Championship team that nearly made the Final Four, is head coach of Florida Southern College. Florida Southern competed a 36-1 season today by winning the Division II National Championship over Indiana (of Pennsylvania) 77-62 at the Ford Center in Evansville.

This was Darner's ninth season in Lakeland and, as the reigning Division II championship coach, Darner will probably get some solid Division I looks after the season. He has coached Florida Southern to eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments, but this was the first championship for the Mocs.

So congratulation to coach Darner! Yes, Purdue is capable of winning a national championship in men's basketball. We now have proof!
