2015 Bracketology: Purdue’s February 5 Update

Purdue's profile is positively bubble-worthy now.

Sandra Dukes-USA TODAY Sports

What a win by the Boilers over Ohio State yesterday! Purdue has gone through a difficult stretch in the schedule and has risen to second place in the Big Ten at 7-3 after 10 games. A conference title is still a longshot, but the fact that it is evens till possible is amazing. Three of the four victories have also been over ranked teams, so that means we can actually talk NCAA Tournament without laughing.

At 15-8 and in second place we'd probably be in if the season ended today, but we have a month to go. The good news is that our work in conference has been very impressive. If we have a winning record in the final 8 games it should be enough. The RPI and KenPom numbers are getting there, and we're even racking up some quality wins now.

Beating Ohio State gave the Boilers their best KenPom win by far. Beating Indiana is Purdue's best RPI win. The wins over Iowa, BYU, and NC State are arguably wins over NCAA possible teams, or at least fellow Bubble teams where we would have a head-to-head edge. As long as Purdue can sweep Rutgers, beat Nebraska, beat Minnesota again, and beat Illinois at home it should be in good shape.

Purdue RPI: 72 (Up from 85)

Purdue KenPom: 59 (Up from 63)

Best wins: Indiana (RPI 32, KenPom 50), Iowa (RPI 50, KenPom 45), Ohio State (RPI 42, KenPom 17) NC State (RPI 60, KenPom 56), BYU (RPI 56, KenPom 39)

Bad Losses: North Florida (RPI 195, KenPom 148), Gardner-Webb (RPI 122, KenPom 198), Vanderbilt (RPI 109, KenPom 60)

Samford - 10-14, 3-8 SoCon, RPI: 305, KenPom: 295 - Only one game for Samford since last week, and it was a 68-58 win over Furman. This win is not really doing anything for us.

IUPUI - 8-14, 4-4 Summit, RPI: 226, KenPom: 252 - IUPUI has also only played oncesince the last update, but it was a 63-59 at Western Illinois. The Summit League champ is probably going to be lucky to avoid being a 16 seed.

Grambling State - 2-17, 0-9 MEAC, RPI: 349, KenPom 351 - After losing to Arkansas-Pine bluff and Mississippi Valley State 68-65 (a near win), the Tigers are one step closer to the "dream" of double 351s for worst team in the country.

Kansas State - 12-10, 5-4 Big 12, RPI: 87, KenPom: 75 - The Sunflower State battle over the weekend was a 68-57 loss to Kansas, and the Wildcats are slipping off the Bubble after a strong start in the Big 12. They played Texas Tech last night, but I finished this post before the game was over. Ed. Note: Texas Tech won 64-47, knocking K-State to 12-11, 5-5.

Missouri - 7-14, 1-7 SEC, RPI: 160, KenPom: 180 - Missouri has been awful of late. They played Alabama last night in a game that ended after I wrote this piece, but were trailing and were on a seven game losing streak coming in. Their brush with fame was a 69-53 loss to Kentucky at home. Ed. note: Alabama won 62-49, so Missouri is 7-15, 1-8.

BYU - 17-7, 7-4 WCC, RPI: 56, KenPom: 39 - BYU is back on track in the WCC after beating San Francisco 78-74 and Santa Clara 78-57 in their last two games. They are back tied for third place in the WCC, but their season likely comes down to February 12 vs. St. Mary's and at Gonzaga on February 28.

North Carolina State - 14-10, 5-6 ACC, RPI: 60, KenPom: 56 - Trevor Lacy appeared to save the Wolpack with a game-winning three-pointer in an 81-80 win at Georgia Tech, but they followed that with a crappy 88-84 loss at Wake Forest on Tuesday night.

North Florida - 14-10, 6-1 Atlantic Sun, RPI: 195, KenPom: 148 - North Florida made it to 6-0 in the Atlantic Sun with an 86-67 win over Kennesaw State, but lost to South Carolina Upstate 79-74 at home last weekend. They are tied for first place with Florida Gulf Coast

IPFW - 11-11, 4-5 Summit, RPI: 247, KenPom: 214 - The Mastodons are finally playing like the Summit League favorite. They won 66-55 at South Dakota and 75-65 at Nebraska-Omaha to earn their third straight victory. Tonight they host league leader South Dakota State.

Arkansas State - 9-12, 4-8 Sun Belt, RPI: 259, KenPom: 267 - Arkansas State continues to be a middling Sun Belt team with no real value. They have now lost four of their last five after losing 75-65 to Arkansas-Little Rock and 74-43 to Georgia State.

Vanderbilt - 12-10, 2-7 SEC, RPI: 109, KenPom: 60 - Vaandy finally right the ship by beating Florida this week 67-61, ending a seven game losing streak. That streak reachedseven games when they lost to Texas A&M 69-58 at the weekend.

Notre Dame - 21-3, 9-2 ACC, RPI: 28, KenPom: 15 - There is still no shame in losing to the Irish, as they knocked off Boston College 71-63 last night after losing 76-72 ata desperate Pittsburgh team in need of a huge victory. They are part of a three-team race in the ACC with Duke and Virginia.

Gardner-Webb - 15-9, 7-4 Big South, RPI: 122, KenPom: 198 - If we can just get the Bulldogs into the top 100 the computers will give us a bit of a break. They are a game out of first place in the Big South behind High Point and Radford after beating Coastal Carolina 66-64 and Longwood 87-78. They already have a win over Radford earlier in the year, too.
