2016 Purdue Football Recruiting: Austin Larkin Commits

Purdue grabs Barry Larkin's nephew!

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

It is no secret that Purdue needs a pass rush. For the past two seasons the team lead in sacks has been four. This year it was Evan Panfil and Antoine Miles who each had four sacks, and both split time and had limited effectiveness in other areas.

So, Purdue is turning, once again, to the JuCo ranks. Austin Larkin, a 2-star pickup from City College of San Francisco, the same school that gave us two-year starter David Hedelin, commited to Purdue today. He is a mid-year enrollee and can sign his LOI today even, so consider him locked in.

Larkin is listed at 6'5" and 250 pounds with a 4.6 40 time according to Rivals. He had offers from Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, and UTEP before getting to Purdue today. In high school he played at Dougherty Valley in San Ramon, California and was only listed at 6'2" 212, so he apparently had a big growth spurt. That is where I found his highlights:

This past season he was part of a team that went 12-1, won the California State Junior College Championship this past Saturday, and a mythical national championship at the junior college level. It took some digging, but I found he had 38 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks with a fumble recovery. That was second on the team behind a guy named Rod Jones who had 16.5 sacks.

Larkin originally played at Notre Dame, where he was a walk-on linebacker who was apparently impressive in the spring of 2014:

Sophomore walk-on linebacker Austin Larkin (6-3, 240 from San Ramon, California) has been turning some heads and battling for reps at practice. According to Coach Kelly he might not be ready for snaps on defense this fall but could be an important special teams player.

As if his path was not circuitous enough, he originally committed FCS Coastal Carolina before walking on at Notre Dame. His dad played football and Notre Dame in the early 80's and later signed with the Buffalo Bills. He is also the nephew of Cincinnati Reds Hall-of-Famer Barry Larkin and cousin of Shane Larkin, who plays for the New York Knicks and led Miami to an ACC title in basketball.

Larkin will sign today along with defensive back Kamal Hardy, and both will be able to go through spring practice. That also gives Purdue three junior college transfers on the defense and all three should come in and threaten to play immediately.
