College Basketball Rankings December 14: Purdue Moves Into Top 10

New, 108 comments

Purdue is ranked in the top ten in Men's Basketball for the first time since March 2011.

Sandra Dukes-USA TODAY Sports

For the first time since the final regular season poll of the 2010-11 season Purdue is ranked in the top 10. It is an excellent recognition for a team that has played extremely well so far, but it means absolutely nothing unless it continues to play well. During week 4 of the 2003-04 season Purdue was ranked as high as 16th. That team did not even make the NCAA Tournament.

So we need to stay hungry. There are (hopefully) 29 more games to go this season.

First, lets look at the coaches poll, where Purdue moves up to 8th:

1 Michigan St 11-0 794 28 1 0 1/13
2 Iowa St. 9-0 719 3 2 0 2/7
3 Oklahoma 7-0 675 1 8 5 6/8
4 Kentucky 9-1 665 0 4 0 1/4
5 Kansas 8-1 664 0 7 2 5/7
6 Duke 8-1 649 0 5 -1 3/5
7 Maryland 9-1 640 0 9 2 2/9
8 Purdue 11-0 552 0 11 3 11/24
9 Virginia 8-1 547 0 10 1 6/12
10 Xavier 10-0 491 0 13 3 13/NR
11 North Carolina 7-2 474 0 3 -8 1/9
12 Arizona 9-1 469 0 12 0 10/14
13 Villanova 8-1 464 0 6 -7 6/9
14 Baylor 7-1 323 0 15 1 15/25
14 Providence 10-1 323 0 18 4 18/NR
16 Louisville 7-1 288 0 19 3 19/NR
16 West Virginia 8-1 288 0 14 -2 14/23
18 Butler 8-1 268 0 21 3 20/NR
19 Miami-Florida 8-1 265 0 20 1 19/NR
20 Cincinnati 8-2 101 0 22 2 17/NR
21 Gonzaga 6-3 90 0 17 -4 11/17
22 George Washington 9-1 87 0 31 9
23 Vanderbilt 6-3 79 0 16 -7 13/20
24 Texas A&M 8-2 77 0 25 1 20/NR
25 South Carolina 8-0 70 0 29 4
*Hi/Low Rankings

Hi/Low = The highest and lowest ranking each team has held during the designated season. Any team that starts the season unranked and/or falls out of the top 25 during the season will reflect a "NR" (not ranked) designation as its lowest rank.

Schools Dropped Out

No. 23 Oregon, No. 24 Utah.

Others Receiving Votes

UCLA 59; Connecticut 45; Oregon 38; Pittsburgh 30; Colorado 25; Wichita State 19; Dayton 18; Notre Dame 15; Davidson 13; Syracuse 12; California 9; Arkansas-Little Rock 9; Indiana 9; Iowa 8; LSU 8; Northwestern 7; Georgetown 6; Texas 3; UNLV 2; Utah 1; South Dakota State 1; Florida 1.

This is interesting because Purdue has games left against No. 1 Michigan State, No. 7 Maryland (twice), No. 18 Butler, No. 23 Vanderbilt, and from the others receiving votes category; Indiana, Iowa, and Northwestern.

So if you wanted to see Purdue play a ranked team it gets two of them in the next two games.

In the AP Poll Purdue goes up two spots to No. 9:
