Purdue has always been strong on the defensive line. It seems like we're sending at least one D-lineman to the NFL every season. The same could be true this year with Ryan Russell as the most likely NFL Draft candidate on the roster. One of the guys that could be nextin line in a few years is today's player.
Johnny Daniels - Fr. (RS)
Chicago, Illinois (Foreman HS)
6'3", 280 pounds
Defensive Tackle
2014 Projection: Reserve at defensive tackle
Daniels is hopefully another impact freshman coming out of redshirt, but there are a few established players ahead of him. Purdue should be rather deep at defensive tackle with Ra'Zahn Howard, Ryan Watson, Jake Replogle, and Michael Rouse III all in the two-deep right now, but rotations are important. Purdue's hybrid 3-4 alignment could also affect Daniels' playing time, as it places a premium on defensive tackles that can either hold the middle alone or come off the end.
There are some promising numbers though. As a senior Daniels had 82 tackles, five sacks, and three forced fumbles. He was also a team captain and the Chicago City Defensive Player of the Year, so his leadership is important as well.
