Purdue Softball Season Ends In Big Ten Tournament

The Boilers finish a game under .500 for 2014.

USA TODAY Sports

I think I am starting to become a curse for Purdue Sports. On April 23rd Purdue beat No. 4 Michigan to draw within two games of first place in the Big Ten. It seemed as if a Big Ten title and NCAA berth were strong possibilities. Instead, Purdue went 2-7 in the nine games after that and closed their season today at 27-28-1.

The loss today came at the hands of Minnesota, who beat Purdue 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament after taking two of three last weekend from Purdue. Purdue had advanced thanks to a 4-2 win over Indiana on Thursday and even led 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth today against Minnesota, but gave up a bases loaded walk followed by a grand slam from Bree Blanchette to give the Golden Gophers a 6-3 win.

The good news is that Purdue showed improvement in its first year under Kim Schuette. Purdue was 23-32 and 8-15 against the Big Ten last season, but improved to 27-28-1 and 13-10 in the Big Ten with wins over ranked Michigan and Minnesota. Purdue also beat #10 Texas this season. With the new softball facility coming next season the program is definitely on the rise.
