2014 Maui Invitational: Purdue vs. Missouri GameThread

It is a battle of Gold and Black in today's first game in Maui.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday Purdue was resilient. Today, Purdue has to win. The worst thing you can do in the Maui Invitational is go 0-3, because that likely means you lost to Chaminade somewhere along the way and you now have an ugly Division II loss hanging around your next. The next worst thing is a -2 trip where the only win comes over Chaminade. Beating the Silverswords serves only to save embarrassment, as the game doesn't even count for a team's RPI. It is like it never happened at all come selection Sunday.

That's where Purdue finds itself today. beat Missouri, and we're likely facing a decent BYU team with a win already in our pockets. That would give us a chance to go 2-1 with two good, but not fantastic wins, but an otherwise successful trip since Missouri is a major conference foe and BYU is a possible NCAA team.

Lose, and we're 0-2 and likely facing Chaminade tomorrow in the pity game. I want to go 2-1. Before the tournament I considered 2-1 to be a very successful trip. Considering there is only one 3-0 team, one 0-3 team, and three each of 1-2 and 2-1 teams coming out of this, there is still work to do.
