Today is the day! The 2014-15 Men's basketball season starts TONIGHT in Mackey Arena Live on a TV service that likely costs more than a monthly porn membership: BTNPlus. Leading the way will be the newest Boiler:
Jon Octeus - Grad Student
Palm Beach County, FL (Royal Palm Beach HS, Colorado State)
6'4", 175 pounds
Guard
2014-15 Projection: Starter at Point Guard
We were not expected to have Mr. Octeus on the roster this year. In fact, he was supposed to be playing at UCLA, but he did not get into the graduate program there. Their loss was our gain, as he was able to enroll at Purdue after graduating at Colorado State.
We picked up one of the better 1-year transfers in the country. It is a shame that we only get one year with him because after two exhibition games it looks like we're going to like him a lot. He is a point guard that can score, distribute, shoot the three, rebound, and loves playing defense. I can't think of a better player to get at a position of need. He gives us the luxury of bringing P.J. Thompson along a little more slowly instead of thrusting the point guard spot into his hands from day one.
Octeus has a ton of experience too. He started all 32 games last season for Colorado State and averaged 13.4 points per game. The year before he played in all 35 games as Colorado State made the NCAA Tournament and even won a game before losing to eventual champ Louisville. He attended Wabash Valley College before that and only played one year, which is why he had a year left this season.
In high school Octeus was class president, so he is a natural leader. By all accounts he looks like a perfect fit for this Boilermaker team, so I am glad he is on board.
