2 Days To Purdue Basketball: Jon McKeeman

Today's player is a walk-on that was a member of last year's Big Ten all-Academic team.

A few years ago a new walk-on debuted late in the season. It came during the Michigan game at Mackey in 2012-13 when a number 2 was spotted in the warm-up line. We did not know him then, but we have since learned that he is today's featured player:

Jon McKeeman - Jr.

Ft. Wayne, IN (Carroll HS)

6'1", 190 pounds

Guard

2014-15 Projection: Deep reserve

McKeeman is the stereotypical walk-on. He is way down at the end of the bench, few people know him, but when he does get into a game people go crazy for him to shoot. To date he has played 11 minutes across six games. In 2012-13 he had a trillion in the CBI win over Western Illinois for his only playing time that year. Last season he played 10 minutes over five games and scored five points and grabbed four rebounds. All five points came in the win over Central Connecticut State when he hit a three and a two. He did all of this while sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in chemistry. That got him on the all-Big Ten Academic Team for 2013-14 and won him the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award.

McKeeman is very likely a 25/25 guy this year: He is only going to play when Purdue is up 25 or down 25 at the end of games. His major work will be done in practice where he can push other guards defensively to get better.
