Purdue landed a verbal commitment today from Twazanga Mugala, a 6'3" 215lb. defensive end from Ardrey Kell High School in North Carolina. Mugala was offered by the coaching staff last week and also had offers from Army, Navy, Connecticut, and hometown Charlotte along with reported interest from N.C. State, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest. He is currently unrated by Rivals/247/ESPN but is sure to score at least a couple of stars for having such a badass name.
Mugala is a pass rush specialist currently leading his team in sacks, but he's going to have to spend at least a year bulking up to be able to compete as a B1G level d-lineman. I would say he could see time at outside linebacker until he gets bigger, but Purdue is pretty full and extremely young at that position already. He will almost certainly redshirt his freshman year but could be a factor in a reserve role for 2016.
With two seniors on their way out and no confirmed commitments yet to groom for the future, the defensive line was one of the biggest holes remaining for the 2015 class. Purdue now has roughly five spots remaining for next year and still has some huge gaps to fill at tight end and, to a lesser extent, the defensive secondary.
Here are some highlights via hudl of Mugala from earlier this season:
