24 Days To Purdue Football: Frankie Williams

Purdue's other starting cornerback was a breakout freshman in 2012.

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

No, I haven't lost count of the days. I made a mistake about two weeks ago and skipped over the 24th day to Purdue football. As a result, I have been a day ahead in the countdown and I completely whiffed on one of our starters. I will make up for it by profiling him today, on the real 8th day to Purdue football.

Frankie Williams - So.

Tampa, Florida (Robinson HS)

5'9", 185 pounds

Cornerback

2013 Projection: Starter at Cornerback

Last year was a very impressive season for Williams. He was not a full-time starter, as he is taking over the spot vacated by Josh Johnson, but he played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman and started five of them. He finished with 36 tackles and a team high nine pass breakups. He was a bit of a breakout player that could be in line for bigger things this year.

Against Eastern Michigan he grabbed his first career interception and got his second later in the season. He was especially active against Indiana with five tackles and three pass break-ups.

Williams is like a younger version of Ricardo Allen. Both are have similar size and are tenacious defenders. Williams is expected to handle punt returns this year as well, which is a very good thing. In high school he returned a combined nine kickoffs and punts for touchdowns, so we might finally have a weapon in that area.
