2013 IHSAA Sectional Final Scores: Bryson Scott Joins 2,000-Point Club

Bryson Scott leads his team to a third straight sectional title and becomes the 42nd player in state history to score 2,000 points.

Saturday night 61 of the 64 Sectional champions were crowned for boys basketball in the state of Indiana, making Regional Saturday, the best day of the year in the state, all but complete. Three sectional finals were postponed to Monday because they involved schools with a team playing in the girls state finals in Terre Haute today. The other 61 went off with some decent surprises.

For the third straight season Fort Wayne Northrop and Bryson Scott will be headed to the Marion regional. The last two seasons they have been ousted by Pendleton Heights and Homestead, respectively, in the morning session. Northrop beat DeKalb 67-47 behind 24 points from Bryson. That puts him at 2,017 points for his career. He became the 42nd boys player in IHSAA history to score 2,000 points. He is currently 40th in state history, passing Luke Recker and Pat Manahan tonight.

With at least one more game against New Haven (with Notre Dame recruit V.J. Beachem) Scott can move even higher on the state scoring list. At a modest 20 points on Saturday against New Haven he can pass Jeff Perlich (2,019), Ricky Hise (2,022), Steve Collier (2,023), Ron Bonham (2,028), and Kevin Ault (2,028). He's also within striking distance of A.J. Graves (2,041), and Caleb Springer (2,042). With a maximum of four games left he could reach the top 25, with Steve Alford (2,116) currently in 25th place, but he would need to average 25 points per game all the way to the state finals.

Northrop did defeat New Haven 71-66 on December 21, so they could reach the Regional final and get a rematch of last week's 65-61 overtime loss at Kokomo. Since Kokomo is playing in this regional I will be there for both Kokomo-Carmel and Ft. Wayne Northrop-New Haven in the morning, and will stay for the championship if Kokomo wins, especially if they face Northrop.

Another factor is Tipton's Mike Crawford, who, minutes after Bryson, became the 43rd player to crack 2,000 career points. Crawford broke former Purdue great Matt Waddell's school record at Tipton earlier this season, and they are still alive after winning their sectional. Crawford is at 2,011 points after 35 against Madison-Grant in Tipton's 70-58 win. He's currently six behind Scott, but Tipton is rated No. 2 in Class 2A and will play the regional on their home floor next week. They are favored to win both games against and reach a third straight semi-state, so Crawford very well could pass Scott before he is done.

Elsewhere in Indiana:

  • Class 4A No. 7 Cathedral beat No. 10 Indianapolis Tech 66-50 to move on to the regional. This was the fourth time Tech and Cathedral played this season, with each winning twice. Class of 2015 target Jalen Coleman had 17, while Trey Lyles injured his knee and did not play for Tech.
  • Eron Gordon (2016) and Perry Poindexter (2014) were crushed by defending state champ and No. 1 rated Carmel 58-38. Carmel was up 41-13 after three quarters, so it was pretty much a disastrous night for North Central. Gordon had 14 points and 6 rebounds.
  • The biggest upset of the night was Class A No. 2 Waldron, who was a perfect 22-0, falling 64-54 to Baptist Academy, who is only 13-11.
  • Only two teams, Munster in Class 4A and Rockville in Class A, made it through the sectional rounds undefeated.
  • Only Carmel in Class 4A survived the sectional as defending state champions. Class 3A champ Guerin Catholic and Class 2A two-time champ Park Tudor went down on Friday, while Class A champ Loogootee lost to archrival Barr-Reeve on Saturday in a rematch of Barr-Reeve's only regular season loss. Carmel will play Kokomo in the Marion Regional's other game next Saturday.
  • Jac-Cen-Del at 8-15 in Class A is the sectional winner with the worst record. They will play in the regional with the next two worst records of Baptist Academy (13-11) and University (13-11).
  • Your best Regional semifinals next week are in Class 4A with No. 1 Carmel (21-2) against No. 8 Kokomo (22-2), Merrillville (20-3) vs. No. 2 Munster (25-0), and No. 4 Evansville Harrison (22-1) vs. Jeffersonville (22-3).
  • Linton-Stockton won its first sectional in 31 years.
  • Indianapolis Broad Ripple won its first sectional since 1986.
  • Clarksville also won its first sectional since 1986.
  • LaVille became the third school to win its first sectional since 1986.
  • Gary 21st Century and Baptist Academy each won their first ever sectionals.
