2013 IHSAA Basketball Tournament: The Purdue Targets

The 2013 IHSAA State Tournament gets underway next Tuesday.

2013 Brackets

Above is your link to printable brackets for all four classes of the 2013 Indiana High School basketball State Tournament. It gets underway next Tuesday at 64 sectionals around the state, and here are where the Purdue commitments and targets are playing:

Class of 2013

Basil Smotherman - Smotherman is playing in Class 4A in the difficult Warren Central sectional. Lawrence North (14-5) opens against No. 10 rated Cathedral (18-5). No. 7 Indianapolis Tech (20-3) is also in this sectional. Tech and Cathedral have played three times already with Tech winning two of the three. All three were close games. Lawrence North closes the regular season at No. 3 Pike on Tuesday and Terre Haute North on Friday.

Bryson Scott - Scott has a bit of an easier sectional with Fort Wayne Northrop. Also playing class 4A, Northrop (15-6) has lost three in a row before playing at Homestead and No. 8 Kokomo to end the regular season this week. Northrop opens against host Carroll on Tuesday, but Columbia City (18-3) has the best record in this sectional.

Class of 2014 (all are targets from here on out)

Trevon Bluiett - Bluiett plays for two-time defending state champion Park Tudor and they are heavily favored to win a third straight state title. Park Tudor is 19-2 with losses to North Central and Indianapolis Broad Ripple, but they regained the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A this week. They are ranked No. 9 overall regardless of class. Park Tudor played in the Indianapolis Broad Ripple sectional. They open against Indianapolis Shortridge on Tuesday, but a rematch with Broad Ripple (who beat Park Tudor 45-41 on February 9) could be very interesting.

Aaron Brennan - Brennan played for defending Class 3A champion Guerin Catholic, who is lying in the weeds at 16-5 much like last season. Guerin played in the Mt. Vernon (Fortville) sectional an has a bye to Friday against Brebeuf or host Mt. Vernon. Mt. Vernon was ranked No. 1 in 3A before losing for the first time last Friday. Mt. Vernon is 17-1 and Brebeuf is one of the few teams that has beaten Indy Tech.

Perry Poindexter - Poindexter, a teammate at North Central of Ronnie Johnson, plays in the toughest sectional in the state. No. 9 North Central (14-4) finishes the regular season at Pendleton Heights before playing in the Carmel sectional next Wednesday against No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern (16-3). No. 4 Carmel (17-2) is also in this sectional where six of seven teams are at .500 or better overall.

Class of 2015

Jalen Coleman - Coleman plays for Cathedral and will be playing against Basil Smotherman in round 1.

Hyron Edwards - Edwards is in Class 4A with East Chicago Central (9-9) in the northwest Indiana sectional at Gary West. The No. 1 team in the state, Munster (21-0) is in this sectional and that is who East Chicago opens with.

Derrik Smits - Smits plays for Zionsville (9-9) in the brutal Carmel sectional and they open against No. 4 Carmel next Tuesday at Carmel. He has been limited with a concussion of late.

Joel Okafor - Okafor is in Class 4A for Richmond (14-7) in the New Castle sectional. Richmond has the second best record to Anderson (16-4), but Richmond beat Anderson by 12 in the regular season. Richmond's worst loss might be to Huntington North, as they have played a very good schedule that includes Kokomo, North Central, Columbus North, and Jay County.

Class of 2016

Eron Gordon - Gordon plays for North Central with Poindexter, so his path is the same.
