In my article yesterday on Perry Poindexter Jr. a commenter asked if I could do an update on the current commitments like I do for football. In essence, it makes sense. If I can find info on 12-18 guys weekly in football I can surely find some information on just four players for basketball. I haven't done it much before because I am more tied in closely with Indiana HS basketball. This is the first class since 2005 where Purdue does not have an in-state recruit.
That class (Tarrance Crump, Marcus Green, Nate Minnoy, Chris Lutz, and Korey Spates) was a disaster with only Green playing all four years and Crump graduating as a JuCo guy. It was Painter's first recruiting class, however, so hopefully this one will turn out better.
Dakota Mathias - G - Elida HS, Elida, OH - Elida is 5-2 on the season so far and is 1-1 in the Western Buckeye League. In his most recent game he had 25 points in a 74-45 win over Wapakoneta in conference play. Elida plays later today against local rival Lima Senior.
Vince Edwards - F - Middletown HS, Franklin, OH - Middletown is 4-2 on the season after a 61-50 win over Springboro on December 21. The schedule I found says they don't play again until January 11 vs. Bishop Watterson in Columbus. Another schedule I found through the Cincinnati paper has them in a holiday tournament yesterday and today. That same paper reported a box score from their last game, where Edwards had 28 points in the Springboro win in overtime. Most importantly, he was 11 of 12 from the free throw line.
Jacquil Taylor - F - Cambridge, MA, Beaver Country Day School - As per the school's website, Beaver Country Day is 5-0 on the season with their most recent games being a pair of single-possession wins in a local tournament. News and actual stats for BCD were very hard to come by.
Isaac Haas -C -Piedmont, AL, Hoke's Bluff HS - Hoke's Bluff has already played 14 games in a little over a month, which is damned impressive because even in basketball-crazed Indiana the top teams have only played 7-8 games. Hoke's Bluff is 10-4 with Haas having a solid season. Haas did have a 22-11 game against a ranked team on December 17.
