Purdue's big hosting weekend has yielded a third commitment, as 6' 185 pound cornerback Brandon Roberts became the 13th member of Purdue's 2014 recruiting class on Monday.
Roberts comes in as a defensive back at a position of need, especially after the news that Taylor Richards was arrested yesterday. Ricardo Allen is gone after this season, along with Normondo Harris, so the defensive secondary is in a bit of flux.
Roberts chose Purdue over offers from Cincinnati, and Washington State, but had some interest from Florida State, Louisville, and Georgia Tech. He hales from Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, and is a 2-star commit according to Rivals, but a three-star per ESPN and Scout.
There isn't a highlight video out there that I can find, but it is a relief that Purdue is going defense heavy. He is the third recruit on the defensive side of the ball to commit since Saturday. Combined with offensive line these are the biggest areas of concern for the Boilers.
It also looks like Purdue is going more after fundamentally sound 3-star guys to fill some holes with a few JuCo offensive linemen also mixed in as immediate fixes for that area. By my count Purdue now has five open scholarships, but one or two slots could open up. For example, Jordan Woods was "suspended indefinitely" after the incident with B.J. Knauf and has not officially returned. Richards is also in some limbo as well with his recent arrest.
