2014 Purdue Football Recruiting: Week 8 HS Results

Joe Robbins

The season here in Indiana is winding down as Friday night is the final night of the regular season. I touched on the three in-state recruits earlier in where they were drawn, but before I get to this week's roundup here is the updated scholarship grid with some notes:

  • Ra'Zahn Howard, Jake Replogle, and Evan Panfil all played for the first time vs. Nebraska, giving Purdue nine true freshmen that are playing significant roles.
  • Simmie Cobbs is removed, for now, because he has not officially committed.
  • Some have asked about Brandon Garner, who committed under Hope before even the 2013 class was finished. He is now going to North Texas.
  • Just how young is Purdue? The senior class in 2015 only has 11 players. They are sophomores right now and most are playing with the 39 redshirt or true freshmen on the roster. That makes 50 of 84 scholarship players with at least two more years of eligibility after this season. It also means the 2016 recruiting class could be very small.
  • Gabe Holmes and Rob Henry are wild cards for next year. Holmes was injured early enough and has never used his redshirt, so he could possibly return next year. Henry may apply for a sixth year after missing 2011 with an ACL tear. If both don't return Purdue has 10 slots left for 2014.
  • Of the 18 scholarship seniors on the roster only Bruce Gaston, Ryan Isaac, Greg Latta, Will Lucas, Devin Smith, Kevin Pamphile, and Justin Kitchens are listed as starters. Most of those positions are in jeopardy too.

Now, onto last week's results:

Tim Cason - Clarkston HS, MI - DB - Beat Troy 42-0 - Clarkston moved to 6-1 and will play for their Conference championship this week when they host 6-1 Lake Orion. All I could find was a score, but Cason was recently rated by Rivals as a high 3-star prospect after being unranked, so that is very good.

Gelen Robinson - Lake Central HS, IN - DE/LB - Lost to Merrillville 20-17 - it was a 16th straight loss to Merrillville for Lake Central, and this one cost them the Duneland Conference title. The Northwest Indiana times has a good write up with some highlights.

Denzel Ward - Simeon HS, Chicago, IL - OT - NOT PLAYING - In an interesting twist Ward's HS career is done. After transferring between multiple schools he is actually not playing this season at Simeon HS in Chicago. He had started there and was at IMG Academy in Florida for a time.

Drue Tranquill - Carroll HS, Ft. Wayne, IN - DB/LB - beat Columbia City 56-0 - Carroll was dominant in this one and Drue's younger brother, Justin, shined with 171 yards and four scores on nine carries. This is a big week for Drue as he is hosted by Notre Dame, who is trying to steal him from us.

David Blough - Creekview HS, Carrollton, TX - QB - Beat Forney 31-0 - This was a much needed win for Blough, who was 6 of 16 for 71 yards and a score. Blough also rushed for two scores.

Austin McGehee - Pine Bluff, AR HS - P - Lost 33-25 to Lake Hamilton - Only a score here as the stats are behind a pay wall. McGehee likely hit at least one field goal, however.

Gregory Phillips - Arabia Mountain HS, Lithonia, GA - WR - Beat Mays 32-29 - This was a mild upset as Mays was undefeated coming in in terms of games against their class down in Georgia. That is about all the very brief game wrap says. Another post from an Atlanta TV station says Phillips caught five passes for 120 yards and a score.

Kirk Barron - Marian HS, Mishawaka, IN - OL - Lost 28-14 to Mishawaka - it was a public vs. private school game as Marian lost its third straight game.

Trae Hart - First Baptist Academy, Dallas, TX - WR - Beat Dallas Lutheran 64-0 - Couldn't find more than a score, but Hart likely continued to put up huge numbers.
