Purdue Football Coaching Search: Day 4 Rumors

A new name could be in the hunt for Purdue: Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin.

I was away for most of the afternoon at the funeral for my sister's dad. It was held in Galveston, Indiana, where Twitter has yet to reach so I couldn't even do anything via phone. Now that I have a chance to go over the rumors here is what broke today:

Butch Jones will meet with Purdue - Craig Powers at SB Nation was on it in my absence today, as he is reporting that Butch Jones will meet with Purdue:

Purdue will meet with Cincinnati's Butch Jones regarding their football coach position, according to Football Scoop. Earlier, Brandan Murphy of Boiler Radio reported Jones has been offered the job, but no other outlet is currently reporting the same thing.

This now becomes very interesting given that Purdue opens at Cincinnati next season. Either Jones will get a rude welcome for leaving the Bearcats or some Purdue fans will be frustrated by not getting him. At the very least it is now an official storyline for next year's opener. I find it hard to believe he has been offered since Cincinnati still has a game this week at Connecticut.

Sonny Dykes - Dykes met with NC State today, but there was no official decision from the Wolfpack:

Tech athletics director Bruce Van De Velde said he had no comment on Dykes' interview.

"I can't confirm ... or comment on any interview," Van De Velde said by phone Wednesday night. "We're focusing on recruiting, our new facility we are trying to build (multipurpose facility in the south end zone of Joe Aillet Stadium) and which bowl game we will be going to."

Some sources believe Dyles is still in the running for Purdue:

Mark Mangino - As I reported last night, Mangino has also been reported to be in contact with Purdue. He was also up for the Colorado job, but that might be dead:

Mark Mangino has removed himself from consideration to be the next head football coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. The coach made the announcement himself via Twitter:

I have asked that my name be taken out of consideration for the Colorado position. I wish the school & next coach great success!

Well, that's pretty straightforward.

Chuck Martin - A new name in the hunt is Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin. This was brought to my attention via e-mail, so here is what I was able to dig up:

Chuck Martin (Notre Dame - offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach): Martin has plenty of ties to the Midwest. Along with spending the past three seasons in South Bend, he took over for Brian Kelly as head coach at Grand Valley State in 2004 after four years as the defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach. As head coach, he won two Division II national championships in 2005 and 2006.

That is an interesting rumor. Notre Dame's offense has not done a ton this year, but it has been effective at moving the football and eating up the clock. Tyler Eifert at tight end was a ruthless weapon the Irish used against Purdue too. Plus, he has to have picked up something from a tremendous defense this season.

Darrell Hazell - The Kent State coach has been named by many people, but there is at least a thread that there is some interest:

Of course, he has a game tomorrow, so I doubt he jetted to Purdue today.
