24 Days To Purdue Football:

The #24 jersey at Purdue was relatively unheralded until a few years ago, when Kory sheets wore it as he obliterated the school record for touchdowns. His 54 career scores is a record that will likely stand for quite sometime. No one is within 12 touchdowns of his record, and only Mike Alstott is within 17. Once again, we have the #24 jersey on the back of a promising running back in Akeem Shavers.

2011 Projection: Top reserve at running back

By all accounts the running game is working very well right now. Ralhp Bolden is back, and Akeem Shavers, who was able to enroll in the spring and go through spring practice, has been a more than capable backup. Reggie Pegram and Jared Crank are also plowing paths at fullback. The passing game may not be working, but as long as we can consistently run the ball I am happier because it keeps the ball out of the other team's hands longer.

Shavers averaged an astounding nine yards per carry in his last season of JuCo ball, and was a 1,000 yard back in high school. Already 21, he brings instant maturity at a position of need. This past season he appeared in six games with 50 carries for 450 yards and three touchdowns. His biggest day came against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M when he had 210 yards rushing and two scores. At Redwater High School he once ran for a school record 331 yards and three touchdowns in a loss.
