Today's player is the first one I really know nothing about coming in, but I have to give him a special nod of recognition for becoming a recent Twitter follower.
Sam McCartney - Fr.
Hometown: West Lafayette, IN (West Lafayette HS)
Kicker
6'4", 183
2011 Projection: Likely Redshirt
If we see McCartney out there in the future he will have earned his spot. We already have the ICBM in Carson Wiggs ready to bomb away from deep. Two kickers have already committed for next season, leaving McCartney as the freshman walk-on fighting for a job that has little turnover barring a complete disaster at the position.
McCartney does come from a winning program. He helped the West Lafayette Red Devils to a perfect 14-0 record in 2009 and the Class 3A State championship in Indiana. Last year the Red Devils were still solid, winning a sectional before losing to Leo in the regional. During the state championship run he connected on 69 extra points and two field goals. Last season's slightly incomplete stats have him as 2 for 6 on field goals and 43 of 51 on extra points.
Finally, Sam was a track athlete at WLHS, running hte 200 and 400.
