Coach Shondell gives a special shout out to last night's crowd and atmosphere.
For those who were at last night's volleyball game, you know how deafening the Boiler Box was last night during the 5th set. When the team came out for the 5th set, not a single Purdue fan was sitting down as every one rose up to cheer for Purdue as they began the decisive set. Looking back at last night, that was probably the difference last night, as it gave Purdue the support and momentum they needed to dominate the 5th set.
Illinois brought plenty of their fans to last night's game, and just like when the Block Party travels, they tried to be as loud as possible to help support their Illini. However, as Coach Shondell said, their attempts back fired, as it only pumped up the Purdue crowd even more. Any attempt to start an "I-L-L, I-N-I" chant was immediately drowned out by the Purdue faithful with either a Boiler Up chant or Hail Purdue. As you could tell from my video summary, my voice barely survived after the football and volleyball games last night.
For those who weren't at the game, go back to the Purdue/Ohio State Basketball game in 2011 when JaJuan Johnson had the 180 dunk at the end of the game. Remember how crazy Mackey Arena was going during that play until the end of the game? That's almost how the Box was last night, I wouldn't say a full 100% due to size and set up, but it was at least 80%-90% equivalent to that game throughout the entire 5th set. Last night's crowd was one of the best, if not the best crowds I have been a part of for Purdue Volleyball. Yes, the Nebraska game was also great, but that game was no where close to being as competitive as the Illinois game.
If you really want to experience a volleyball game this year, make a trip to Purdue sometime this year and experience for yourself, you will enjoy the experience and it will be worth it. Purdue has a big game against #6 Nebraska Friday night, and Nebraska always brings a big crowd, so the more fans that can show up, the better. The team needs all the support it can get this year with some big B1G matches approaching.
