Yes, Volleyball still exists

Juan and James both had to disappear for a little bit

So the last time we covered volleyball on here, Purdue just beat Michigan State in 5 sets for the second time this season. Since that time I have had to travel to Ann Arbor for their Graduate Symposium while James was up to his neck in school work and meetings, causing both of us to miss the Illinois and Northwestern games. Then this past weekend, we were both on the Boiler Awakening #5 retreat, where I was a staff member getting no sleep and James was a clueless participant (though I'm convincing him to be on staff next semester!). This caused us to miss the Iowa and Nebraska games this weekend, which proved to be quite exciting. Instead of providing full recaps for the game's we missed, here are the links and a quick recap for each game.

Purdue Volleyball wants YOU to be at Mackey Arena and sell it out this Saturday at 7pm as they take on #2 Penn State.

Boiler Volleyball Wins Five-Setter At Illinois - PURDUESPORTS.COM - Purdue Official Athletic Site

The No. 22 Boilermaker volleyball team won their 13th-straight five set match, coming from behind to top Illinois 3-2 on the road Wednesday night. Something is wrong with this Illinois team, as they have gone from a national title runner up to maybe squeezing into the NCAA Tournament. I know they have a young team, but you would expect more out of Champaign. Even the fans were disappointed as Huff Hall was quite empty for that game.

Volleyball Sweeps Northwestern for Fourth-Straight Win - PURDUESPORTS.COM - Purdue Official Athletic Site

The No. 22 Boilermaker volleyball team swept the season series with Northwestern, extended their current win streak to four matches and moved to 18-7 on the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Wildcats Saturday night. Northwestern generally gives Purdue trouble, but not the last 2 seasons. This game could be seen as where the team finally turned a corner and may be heading towards the right path.

No. 21 Boilers Sweep Iowa - PURDUESPORTS.COM - Purdue Official Athletic Site

Revenge is sweet against OMHR, who swept Purdue in West Lafayette the day after Nebraska swept Purdue. Could have been a sign of things to come in Iowa City as Purdue beat OMHR in football the next day.

No. 9 Nebraska Edges No. 21 Volleyball 3-2 - PURDUESPORTS.COM - Purdue Official Athletic Site

The No. 21 Purdue Boilermakers hung with No. 9 Nebraska for five sets, but couldn't pull off the upset, falling 3-2, Saturday night. Purdue lost its first 5-set game since early 2010, ending its 13 straight 5-set wins and 5 game winning streak. Despite the close loss, it's nothing for the Boiler's to be ashamed off. The Coliseum is one of the toughest places to play in the Big Ten and the nation. I don't like to count moral victories, but the Boilers should keep their head up high after this game.

Shondell Talks About 2012 Signing Class - YouTube

Coach Dave Shondell talks about 2013 signee Ashley Evans and how she fits into the program.

So after a tough stretch for Purdue starting in October, they have seemed to have turn things aroundin November. I know that loss in Lincoln was tough, but it still is a good sign for this young and veteran team. Though Purdue had the slow start, I give props to Coach Dave Shondell on keeping his cool during the tough losing stretch. Even though they did loss to Nebraska in 5 sets, I still consider Coach Shondell to be the best 5 set coach in the Big Ten and possibly the nation.

This upcoming weekend is HUGE for Purdue, and I'm not referring to the cripple fight out in Champaign this weekend. Purdue hosts a hot and dangerous Ohio State team who is looking to get revenge this Friday night for a 3-1 loss at home. But the big, Big, BIG game is against Penn State on Saturday, which will be held in Mackey Arena. The volleyball team wants to break its old attendance record and wants to fill up Mackey Arena for this Top 25 showdown. I encourage everyone to attend this game. I know PUDM is also this weekend, so I know that will take away some of the students.

But I know some people want to travel out to Illinois this weekend for the game. That's a 3:30 kickoff, so it is unlikely that you can make it back to Mackey for the volleyball game. I support and love Purdue sports, but let's be honest, do you really want to drive out to Champaign and watch possibly one of the worst football games in the Big Ten this season? Or would you rather watch two Top 25 programs, one of whom is in the Top 5 and a national title contender, battle it out in legendary Mackey Arena?

Choose wisely.
