Purdue University Memes

I encourage everyone to check out one of the funniest pages on the internet for Purdue students and alums, the Purdue University Memes facebook page. That shit is hilarious. I've posted quite a few memes on there already, several of which have made the front page. Go to the "Everyone (Most Recent)" tab to get all of the new memes as they come up. It's worth the time.

Q&A with Matt Painter

There have been lots of questions (e.g. why not put Byrd in earlier in the OSU game), and so I went directly to the ultimate source (CMP). Here is an excerpt from our Q&A session:

2014 will be BIG recruiting year !

With the loss of Travis and Sandi the term Big is where the focus will be. Here is a name you may not have heard of but Painter has Amanze Egezeke at 6'7 205 from Huntley Illinois he plays for the Wolves AAU team. Along with Bates-Diop CMP may be doing his one stop shopping to fill his need for big. In an interveiw for a Michigan blog he said Purdue is intressed in him but has not offered. Purdue did offer Bates-Diop and he is now said to be a strong Purdue lean. With these two and Sean Sellers 2014 could be a really good year. I would keep an eye on the wolves as Purdue is trying to harvest their talent. I.E Stephens and Jordan Ash.

On a personal note I had a medical setback but I am doing Ok.

Hope's Plan for Quarterback

Rightfully so there have been alot of jokes and maybe some frustration running around about the number of quarterbacks committed for next year coinciding with how the two quarterback system was run last year. I like many of you don't like the idea of a pure two quarterback rotation and so I wanted to get some clarity on if this was actually likely to be the case. I want to share with you a little bit of what I found and what I think it means. I am no means an expert and I very well could be dead wrong but I think I have rounded up some decent conclusions.

One of the more important bits of info I came across was actually straight out of Hope's mouth in his most recent Gold and Black Live. He described in a few minutes his plan for the quarterback position. He wants to name a starter and it seems like he prefers that starter to be a more traditional drop-back passer. He also wants one or several athlete quarterbacks who will primarily line up at other spots like halfback or wideout but take a sizable amount of surprise wildcat snaps. He envisions moving the pocket passer out wide forcing the defense to put a man on him thus thinning the interior defense so the athlete quarterback has more room to run. Hope also said he wants the number two quarterback to take regular game snaps at quarterback so if the number one goes down the team isn't finished.

Hope said this has been his plan for a while but was derailed by injury. He wanted Marve to be the starter and then line up Henry (and I also assume Siller) everywhere including quarterback. With both of these guys back we might be able to see this Hope quarterback master plan come together for a full season in 2012. After these guys are gone it is clear, after I looked at all of the recruits as a whole, that Hope is setting up this system for the next half decade.

Lets look at how these guys will fit:

The Refs Are All Right: Reviewing the Officiating of Purdue vs. OSU

So, about last night. That was one hell of a game, and against the odds it was a matchup of equals. Purdue and Ohio State both shot the lights out, especially on three-pointers, and the lead changed hands all night long. I was fortunate enough to have a ticket to the game, and any misgivings about the game starting so late (9:11 PM? Really, ESPN?) were soon forgotten. It was an supremely enjoyable game, and was anxious to see how Purdue and Ohio State fans reacted to the game. Ohio State fans were concerned but relieved, and Purdue fans were disappointed but encouraged that they had hung so tough with the #3 team in the country in such an even contest, and... huh?

We showed a lot of fight last night and we win that game without a huge assist from the refs.

This did not sit right with me. You may be wondering about my bias, and you'd be right: I am an Ohio State fan, albeit one with a Purdue alumnus for a mother. Sadly, we Ohio State fans have earned the ignoble reputation of being obnoxious and disliked, and I can see how how going onto a Purdue site after a painful loss to tell them they're wrong to complain about something could go over poorly. But my gut told me that the officiating wasn't so bad, and with the Author/Editor/Founder/DictatorForLife's encouragement, here is a review of every personal foul and notable no-call in the game. Calls are graded as Legit, Probably Legit, Questionable, Probably Bad, and Bad. If you would like to follow along, see here and here.

Should we use a big lineup?

So I was sitting in an econ class today, and I got to thinking. If we can win the rebound battle, would we win more games? If we can out-rebound a team or even come close to keeping the battle even, I have got to think that our chances of winning the game goes up. I haven’t crunched any numbers or looked at any stats like some of you guys enjoy doing. With that said, how does the H&R community feel about playing/testing out a big lineup this last month? Here’s what I’m thinking.

C & PF- I would use a rotation of Carroll, Lawson, and Chooch.

SF- Here’s where I’d put Robbie. His height would create mismatches and give him an advantage with his height.

SG- You’ve got Ryne, AJ, TJ, DJ, and even Hart to choose from here.

PG- Lew Jack and Barlow.

Starting Lineup

C-TC

PF-Lawson

SF-Robbie

SG- TJ (Sort of a pick ‘em to me at this moment)

PG- Lew Jack (Barlow if you really want to make it a BIG lineup.)

Just a random lineup to get the conversation going. Feel free to come up with your own.

It's just demoralizing

I watched the whole game, and I'm going to be honest...I wasn't expecting us to win, or even be tied at half. We played great! Sure our defense could have been better, but compared to how we played in previous games, we did alright. Of course Sullinger is going to get all the calls on his home court, the officiating was awful. but youve gotta expect that. but its just not fair! I know I'm being a whiny Purdue fan, but it just seems like we cant catch a break. even when we played somewhat close to perfect,(hit 3 pointers, drove to the basket, rebounding stats were even at half), all of these things going our way, and we STILL lose. I do believe that this was a step forward and it also shows how dangerous we are when we hit our shots....but i guess thatd just be any teams excuse.

Shout out to T-Mill

I've been on this site for hours upon hours the past couple of years and when i log on after the OSU game and I see 1534 comments, well I love it. I love seeing the passion of all of these boiler fans speckled with a few other big ten fans in there too. This site had the quality there when i found it after searching for some information about some recruits. A few months later I completely neglected indystar.com and added H&R to my favorites tab. Thanks for all of the hard work T-Mill.

On a completely different note; I can't wait for the second coming of the baby boilers but I would need to see you guys stick with this year.

Hope's Dream still alive!!!!

'By the time the fall comes, Purdue could have as many as 10 quarterbacks on its roster with the incoming recruits. Hope smiled and said, "That's OK." But it's likely he'll figure out a rotation with Marve, TerBush and Henry to start 2012.' - goldandblack.com

Hope is 1 QB shy of that elusive 11 QB lateral play!

Can't wait to see that one. Boiler Up, Hammer Down! Spring ball right around the corner.

Where's the Post??

It is painfully obvious that Purdue has no post presence whatsoever. In the 20 or so games that I've watched, I don't believe I've seen one pass into the post. Our opponents know that there is no threat and can play help defense on our drives to the basket all game long. It's pretty simple to leave your man when you know 99 times out of 100 he isn't getting the ball.

Travis Carrol is a huge disappoinment!! He has no offensesive game at all (I think he might be the only 6'9" person in the country who can't dunk), his defense is below average and I don't see him getting any tough rebounds. I know that players don't get much playing time if they can't play defense, but I would gladly trade poor defense for good rebounding and some sort of offensive production from the paint. That's why I think Lawson should be getting the start and considerably much more playing time then Carrol. Lawson has more athletic ability in his pinky than Carrol does in his whole body. Lawson isn't afraid of jumping and taking the ball to the rim, not to mention his ability to block shots is something that can make players change their shot from time to time. Aren't we all a little sick of watching Carrol miss layups, when there is a guy on the bench that can throw it down? Anyone remember Herb Dove and Justin Jennings? Those types of players give the team a spark when they do something athletic.

Also, with Robbie's struggles to hit any shot outside the paint, why not have him posting up more? If anything, he'll get to the free throw line a few more times and he's our only player that is confident there. Rob has clearly lost a step and driving to the basket isn't happening for him. He needs to be in the paint and do some damage from there. I wonder if Painter is regretting his decision to red shirt Hale and keep Carrol on the team? Don't they need another TE to back up Bade?
