There was no hangover from the Iowa loss.
Purdue came home tonight to face Illinois and trailed 2-0 for a grand total of 26 seconds. Then P.J. Thompson hit a corner three and the rout was on. Purdue hit three-pointers for its first five baskets and quickly pushed the lead to 19-5 thanks to 10 straight points from Carsen Edwards. The Illini never seriously threatened after that. They were done as Purdue led 44-30 at the half and Illinois never had the lead in single digits after Carsen made it 19-5.
Derek Schultz of local Indy radio said it best on Twitter: Purdue was beating the crap out of a team it absolutely needed to beat the crap out of. Isaac Haas (24 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Caleb Swanigan (22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists) could not be stopped. In fact, the only thing that might have stopped Haas would have been if he broke the rim on one of his many thunderous dunks.
Purdue also played excellent team basketball. Dakota Mathias had 6 assists. Vince Edwards had 11 points and 5 asssists. Spike Albrecht only had two assists, but htey were beautiful in finding Haas for easy finishes. Carsen finished with 14 and PJ 11 to give Purdue five players in double figures.
Illinois may or may not be a good team, but Purdue beat the crap out of them either way.
Casey will have more from Mackey later, but this one felt good.
