Vince Edwards

Since it's only middle of the summer and nothing really going on, here's a Vince Edward's article to hopefully cheer things up and brings some enthusiasm.

We know he can rebound, but I really like the 8 assists that seem to indicate that he can be a point forward for us much like Lebron or Pippen. We really need that given our PGs are unproven. The quote from Mathias,

He's got a high IQ and he knows how to play the game

and Vince's own quote

"There's nothing more fun to me than winning a game and having your teammates involved."

make me believe that he is a team player. There are folks who crave for being the hero himself, and there are others who really rejoice in his teammate's success. I really see Vince as the latter. The irony is of course, those who enjoy involving their teammates usually end up being the heroes themselves b/c their teams tend to win. It'll be a refreshing difference from the last couple of years.

And if you click on the link within the link, it says,

Out of timeouts, the Middies inbounded the ball to Edwards, who came down the floor and drove to the right of the lane. All he saw was a wall of bodies, so he threw back to his left and connected with Shouse, whose shot found glass, then the bottom of the net

Did you have the painful flashback like I did when I read "wall of bodies"? All I can think of is an undersized Purdue player running into a wall of bodies, forcing a floater, got blocked, and the other team quickly fast break the other way. But instead, in a strange twist of event, Edwards threw back to his left and connected with an open teammate, and he actually enjoyed doing that! (BTW, you can watch the video of that shot here.)

Wow, what a relief!!!! If he is as good as advertised, then I think it's a major coup in Painter's recruiting (that has been criticized so heavily). I am not proclaiming anything and not trying to hype things up (come on, as Purdue fans, we know it's always a bad idea to put a lot of hope), but it really feels like a refreshing change in style from the last couple of years. Dakota Mathias averaged 6.4 assists per game as a junior (anyone knows his senior stats?), and I really look forward to the ball movement this year. Using their respective high school stats, Edwards and Mathias have more assists per game than our two PGs combined. The cynic may see it as a sign that our PG position is in a terrible shape, but after watching the Spurs in the NBA Finals I see a lot of excitement when so many players can move and pass the ball well. Maybe CMP can finally enjoy the show on the bench this year rather than pacing the sideline frustratingly yelling "MOVE"?
