It is no news that Purdue is in need of leadership and a proven point guard. Matt Carlino is a fifth year transfer from BYU that would fit that bill perfectly. Carlino would be immediately able to play for the 2014-2015 season.
Carlino has set up to visit Purdue on an official visit the first weekend of May which would be next weekend. Purdue would be his first visit and later in the month he has plans to visit Marquette. Carlino originally committed to play for IU and played his senior year at Bloomington South before switching to UCLA and redshirting for his freshman year. He then transferred to BYU and played 3 years there.
BYU was an NCAA tourney team that lost to Oregon in their first game of the tournament.
BYU senior year stats: 27.3 mpg, 13.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.7 spg, and 2.0 topg. 39% FG, 34% 3PT, 69% FT.
Throughout the season Carlino played in 12 games against NCAA tourney teams.
Stats against NCAA tourney teams: 30.1 mpg, 16.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.7 apg, 1.6 spg, 2.3 topg. 38% FG, 31% 3PT, 70% FT.
The stats are impressive, though Carlino shoots A LOT. In those 12 games he was 5.9-15.7 shots per game. He was also 1.8-5.6 3 pointers per game and 2.8-3.9 free throws per game. BYU was also 5-7 in those 12 games against teams like Wichita State and Iowa State.
Carlino would have to be roped in with his shooting but what we can look at with plain fact is he can get steals, and dish out assists while having a small problem with turn overs. I would love to have Carlino as a Boilermaker. Lets hope the staff can close the deal next weekend.
