One season continues for one of our Ohio Boilers, one does not. The post season has spelled success for Vince Edwards and a rough stretch for Dakota Mathias.
Last night Dakota Mathias ended his high school career. Dakota was the heart and soul of his team and the post-season struggles for him finally caught up to his team. The game last night between Dakota and his Elida team and Lima Bath came down to the wire. With seconds left and the ball in Dakota's hands the game was 53-51 in favor of LB. Dakota drew the opposing defense and passed it to a wide open teammate for the game winning 3 pointer. The shot did not go in. The post-season has not been the best time for our Boiler.
At the end of the regular season Mathias was putting up 27.7 ppg, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.8 assists for his 19-3 team while he was shooting 53% overall, 48% from deep on 93-195 3 pointers, and 80% from the stripe.
Over the next 3 tournament games Dakota hit a wall. Out of 3 games Dakota averaged 19.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3 apg, and 1 spg. That doesnt sound too bad, but it was the inaccuracy that killed him. During those 3 games Dakota was 22-61 for 36.1% overall, 5-28 for 17.9% from 3, and 10-11 for 90.9% from the line.
Dakota was usually around 50% or more of his teams offense and with the inaccuracy in those 3 games, Elida could just not work without Dakota. Mathias ends his HS career as the leading scorer in his schools history with 1,906 career points. In his senior year Dakota went 98-223 for 44% from 3. On average per game Mathias was 3.9-8.9 from 3 point land.
I hope Dakota can let this roll off his back, get in the gym, get stronger and more conditioned and make the 3 point shot go in the hoop, because we will desperately need it next year. Dakota is a hard worker, smart, and loves the game of basketball, im sure he will work hard to fix the struggles he had.
