Please allow me a moment to express my sincerest hope that it can't get any worse from here. I mean... it seems like as a Purdue fan, things can ALWAYS be worse.... but they're not going to get any worse from here right?
We just watched a football season from hell, going 1-11. Our only victory was a NARROW win over a Division 2 school, who was playing without their star running back. (Special thanks to IU for that) The debate that raged at the end of football season was one that I never imagined I would hear as a Purdue football fan. The debate wasn't necessarily whether or not this was the worst team in Purdue history, but where this team ranked among the all time worst teams in the Big Ten. I surely thought that it could get no worse. With basketball season right around the corner, I was certain that better days were ahead.
We started with promise, a few hiccups in the road sure, but for the most part we took care of business in the games we were supposed to win, and at least looked competitive in most of our losses. Standing on a 13-5 record, things were good in boiler land. Now..... now we're here. In a turn of events I'm willing to bet not even the most bitter and jaded IU fan would have predicted, we are on course to finish last in basketball as well.
There have been signs of progress, but improvement seems to be taking longer than any of us had hoped. With both of our revenue sports at the bottom of the Big Ten simultaneously, surely this is the bottom right? I guess I'm just reaching out for some shred of hope that next year we'll be back to normal and we'll look back at the 2013-14 sports seasons as a freak anomaly that will never occur again. I believe that both programs are taking the right steps to improve going forward, I think as far as players and coaches go, we have the pieces in place to be successful. The question is, will we put it together next year? Or are we waiting until 2015-16 to return to happy days of old? What are our expectations/hopes for next season in both sports?
At any rate, as men's basketball draws to a close, barring a miracle run in the BTT, or even the NIT, I'm sure all of you will join me in wishing a hearty good riddance to the 2013-14 sports seasons. Here's to hoping that we'll look back on these days as the time when we hit rock bottom, and began the climb towards one brick higher that we've heard so much about. From where I'm standing, it seems that one brick higher would literally be one brick.
(Side note to basketball team: One Brick Higher is a metaphor for increasing levels of achievement each season. It is NOT a request from administration, coaches, or fans to increase your number of bricks on the court. I assure you that no further bricks are needed in that regard.)
