If there is one thing you should know about Purdue women's basketball, it is their ability to overcome adversity. The latest being the injury to KK Houser.
Our team has responded by playing two very good games at home against Ohio State and away at Michigan. Coach Versyp challenged the players to each step up their game, as no one or even two players can replace the combined skill set of KK. The players have really stepped it up. Who would have thought that we would get 2 points from Moses and none from Houser on the road, shoot terrible in the first half, and win? That is what happened today. The defense was particularly impressive. Hamby and Morrissette each hit key three point shots. April Wilson and Whitney Bays both played their hearts out.
The team now sits at 7-5 in conference play. The goal is obviously wanting to win the conference season. Not sure about that with Penn State playing well. But we could definitely win out the last 4 conference regular season games. Even if we win 3 of 4, that should get us to the secondary goal to finish in the top 4 and attain that all-important bye in the Big Ten Tournament.
The Lady Boilers are super motivated now. Players have been challenged to step it up and they have so far responded. Their free throw shooting is simply amazing. Against Ohio State, they made all 20 in the second half. Shot a high percentage today. Which is refreshing after cringing to watch free throw shooting by the men.
Each game is an unknown until played in the conference this year, with lower tier teams winning some upsets. But I like our chances to go into the Big Ten Tournament on a roll and presenting a serious challenge for the three-peat.
One more thing to celebrate. Only 10 turnovers against OSU and only 6 against Michigan. 6? Has that happened in the last 15 years?
