Indiana at Purdue: Time, TV, Preview & More

USA TODAY Sports

What once was the Big Ten's fiercest rivalry features two struggling teams in just one meeting this year.

I've stared at my computer screen for over an hour, just wondering: what do you say?

What do you say about a rivalry that was once arguably the fiercest in all of college sports; a rivalry so strong it divided co-workers, friends and even families; when it has fallen off like this? Sure, there's still plenty for Purdue fans to hate about IU and vice versa, but it's just not the same as it once was.

What do you say about two teams in the basement of the Big Ten battling each other for the honor of staying within two games of fourth place in the Big Ten?

What do you say about a rivalry once defined by its coaches, now being defined by two fanbases with at least some of their members clamoring for a coaching change?

I'm not saying when the game comes around I won't be excited. I'm not saying this game isn't the most important game of the season for Purdue, a game that will determine whether or not my cell phone gets turned on or off for the better part of a week.

This is Purdue-IU, after all.

It's just lost some of its luster.

The interesting thing about this year's meeting of the teams is it may be one of the closer matchups from the last few years; definitely a better matchup than last year's, which ended up with a 30+-point IU win and Purdue's largest defeat in the history of Mackey Arena.

The game will feature the usual amount of contempt for the other team's players. I know the first time Will Sheehey flexes his muscles I'll gag; I'm positive the Paint Crew will let Hanner Perea know their thoughts on his recent arrest. And we all know Tom Crean will pull up his pants and stand on the court while the game is going on.

The storylines are all there. Let's just hope that for the first time in several years the game lives up to the weight of the rivalry.
