Total Scholarships Used | 85 | 69 | 58 | 30 | 1 |
Total Scholarships Left | 0 | 16 | 27 | 55 | 84 |
Some notes:
- Langston Newton, who was declared immediately eligible, will be able to go on scholarship immediately. He has three years of eligibility remaining and does not have to sit out a year because of an NCAA waiver. He moved closer to home to help care for an ailing grandfather, so they approved his waiver.
- Newton takes the 85th and final scholarship for 2014 as it stands now, though there could be two departures because of the legal and suspension situations for Taylor Richards and Jordan Woods.
- The 2014 senior class is very small with only 17 members, so that will make for a smaller 2015 recruiting class.
- The 2015 senior class is even smaller with only 11 members, thus making the 2016 recruiting class even smaller, barring any departures. Since there are some every year we might be able to see that class get int he range of about 15, but it will still be very small.
- Naturally, that makes Purdue very, very young in 2014. Out of 85 scholarship players, a whopping 57 have three years or more of eligibility remaining.
- Of the 28 players with two years or less of eligibility, 6 did not play a particularly large role last season (Torwudzo, Davis, DeBoef, Macarthy, Rouse, Johnson), Schmitt and Griggs are specialists, and Richards is in limbo because of his DWI. Gilliam and Robinson could lose starting jobs to underclassmen too. That means young guys will play A LOT in 2014.
